After much patient waiting, Australia is finally getting a visit from Phonique this month. The honorary Berliner can always be relied upon to make a sought-after record. Over the years, he’s dabbled with labels like Mood Music, Simple and Crosstown Rebels, but his allegiance lies chiefly with Steve Bug’s famous Pokerflat imprint and its deep house partner Dessous. And Phonique is also building up his own baby the Ladies & Gentlemen label, which is skewed more towards quirky pop and disco. As his 2007 album Good Idea confirmed, the man isn’t tied to any one sound.
There’s no denying Phonique’s deft touch in the studio. In the 2008 ‘Beatport Awards’ he took out ‘Best Deep House Artist’ – an honour that speaks volumes about how his tracks work dancefloors. And as a DJ he’s equally on form. Here Phonique tells ITM’s Jack Tregoning what we can expect from his virgin voyage down under.
Phonique plays his first-ever Australian sets at the following venues…
Fri July 4 – Bar Soma, Brisbane
Sat July 5 – Club Club, Chinese Laundry, Sydney
Sat July 12 – The Likes Of You, F Four, Melbourne
