STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW
2008 has seen an explosion of quality trance around the world, with producers seeking inspiration from every corner of the clubbing spectrum – techno, electro, progressive, house and more. With so many exciting trance hybrids creeping their way into DJ sets, the classic melodies of uplifting and euphoric trance has become nearly a niche genre in itself. If you nail it, you’ll stand out from the pack. Ladies and gentlemen, ITM would like to introduce you to the first lady of trance Sophie Sugar.
“The music that I’ve always played and made has only been about the melody, and everything else is built around that. The scene does go through phases, but there is always a market there it seems for the more melodic, classic sound,” Sophie told ITM. “If you’re going to do it, you need to do it right and you need to bring something new to the table production wise, always moving forward with new sounds. But at the end of the day it’s all about creating emotion…. If you’ve got thousands of people on the dancefloor at three in the morning, it’s same principle now as it was back then.”
Things are moving fast for Sophie Sugar in 2008. She’s now part of Armin van Buuren’s prestigious Armada label and with soaring anthems like Fallen Too Far and Redemption, alongside last year’s stormer Day Seven, she’s perfectly placed to become one of the leading mistresses of melodic trance. ITM’s Angus Paterson talks to Sophie Sugar about tapping into that emotion, as well as her involvement with Australian DJ/producer Bexta and her latest Mixology release.
Sophie Sugar has mixed Mixology 11 alongside Bexta, our now through Central Station Records. Catch the pair at the following shows…
