STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW

Steve Porter was tagged as part of the new wave of ‘progressive’ stars several years ago when he began to break through, but he ended up busting right through any such limiting genre classifications. Last year when he toured Australia he talked of the ‘four food groups of dance music’ that feature in his sets – house, breaks, trance and techno. But he’s also known as DJ/producer aficionado who thinks at a 100 miles an hour, and keeps his sets moving at similar such breakneck speeds. His Porterhouse vol. 2 compilation functions as the best illustration of that; with nearly 60 tracks squeezed in over two hours, the pace of the mixing moves in a flurry through the different shades of dance without giving you a chance to collect your thoughts.

“I think sometimes I get criticized for having an attention deficit problem,” he laughs. If it is a disorder, it’s one that yields a whole bunch of dancefloor fun and it’s definitely something that carries across to his DJ sets. “I was aiming with that particular mix to represent my live sets, and how I was playing. I spend a lot of time preparing tracks and editing tunes before I play, so in a way it’s almost like how a scratch DJ prepares for a competition. They get all the sounds lined up before a gig.”

Steve Porter will be back in Australia this weekend for an appearance at Freedom Festival, as well as selected club dates across the country. ITM’s Angus Paterson gets US DJ/producer on the phone and discovers that if he is indeed thinking and mixing at 100 miles an hour when DJing, then he talks just about that fast as well.

Catch Steve Porter playing the following shows around Australia:

Fri Aug 22 – Brown Alley, Melbourne
Sat Aug 23 – Freedom Festival, Sydney
Sun Aug 24 – Sunday Roast, Brisbane
Fri Aug 29 – Metro, Perth
