STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW

What’s that you say? Yes that’s right, TV Rock are coming at you from the underground. At least, that’s where the DJ/producer duo responsible for the infamous smash hit Flaunt It found their roots, and it’s where they see their future. While Onelove favourite Grant Smillie makes for a flashy frontman of sorts, the lion’s share of the studio work is done by Ivan Gough, an individual who’s no less than one of the most prolific and enduring producers in Australian dance music history. So you think you’ve got TV Rock pegged as cheap and cheesy electro? Think again.

“I’ve been making records for over ten years now,” Ivan told ITM. “If anybody thinks we’re just a mainroom electro group, that’s just completely wrong. I’ve made trance in the past, I’ve made a lot of progressive house and I made some of the first breaks records ever in this country in 97-98 with names like Phil K and Luke Chable. I’ve made a really broad spectrum of music. Electro was something we were doing for a while, I still think it has a big place in the music scene, but we’ve moved on.”

The current sound of TV Rock is more in line with the edgy mainroom house that’s pumping out of the clubs in Europe, from prestigious labels like Stealth and Toolroom Records with figureheads like Mark Knight and Laidback Luke and the Swedish House Mafia driving the sound forward. ITM’s Angus Paterson talks to super-producer Ivan Gough from TV Rock to find out more.

Stay tuned for part 2 of this interview, coming in a few weeks time! onelove: Neon Nights, mixed by TV Rock, Thomas Gold, Foley & Generik, is out now through Sony BMG.

Following the #1 club chart success of their single Been A Long Time, TV Rock recently released the debut single for Zoe Badwi on their label Bimbo Rock. Also coming soon, their collaboration with Luke Chable Happiness. There’s certainly lots going on in the TV Rock camp!

Ivan Gough made some great records until Smillie got involved. His mix of Origene - Sanctuary was used by Armin Van Buren as his opening track for his state of trance NYE mix a couple of years ago. Not too mention al the rad wierd stuff he made on the Zero Tolerance label with Phil K, Luke Chable, and Gab Oliver. Shame about TV Cock though, it's been all downhill since then!
