Brisbane clubbing and more particular Brisbane’s venue’s have undergone somewhat of a ‘seachange’ of late, or should we call that a ‘club change’. Many of Brisbane’s favourite venues have fallen by the wayside, much to the dismay of many people. This has forced Brisbane’s smaller promoters, who in the past have had a few options for their regular events, to think outside the square. That square, has basically been The Valley, Brisbane’s underground melting pot of all things exciting in night life. But now, suddenly, a number of events have started popping up in the Brisbane CBD, previously thought too un-cool for anyone with any club cred to frequent. Now, we’ve got Sundance and R:Bar, both in the heart of the Brisbane CBD, promoting some quality club events. The Velvet Room has now stepped up to the plate, and there’s certainly another player in town. The management of The Velvet Room has recently joined forces with Liquidaura Entertainment (who have previously promoted at Valley venues such as The Tivoli, The Tube, Mantra, The Alliance, and Moskva) to present a series of events in their plush clubbing space.
The Velvet Room is located upstairs in The Port Office Hotel, which underwent an extensive and rather expensive refurbishment about 2 years ago. A change in management and a bit of forward thinking from the Port Office, along with the helping hand of Liquidaura, has resulted in a new series of regular monthly events which are set to break the mould from Valley based clubbing to Brisbane based clubbing with substance.
The venue itself is all about style, featuring a classy and comfortable environment, with lots of stylish couches, a large balcony wrapping around the entire club, and a great intimate dancefloor with just the right amount of intelligent lighting. The sound system has been tweaked by a professional sound technician recently to ensure clarity and purpose without blowing you away, and the result is quite stunning from what was experienced at STEREO a couple of weeks back.
The new monthly Saturday night events will be named SPACE, and will feature top shelf interstate DJ’s such as Mark Di Cristo, Trent Anthony, and Gavin Martin, alongside residents Jay P, Allan Ho, and Ian Nearhos, and a few local guests such as Jay:R and Michael McKenna. The nu-breed of DJ’s has not been forgotten either with new talent being given the chance to show their talent in the first set slot of each night.
The Velvet Room will certainly bring a fresh and exciting option to the Brisbane club scene. Arguably, it has been around for a couple of years as a venue, but this is the first time we have seen DJ’s of this calibre use this classy venue the way it should be, bringing great atmosphere to one of the best clubbing spaces Brisbane has to offer.
SPACE opens at The Velvet Room on Sat Feb 16 with special guest Mark Di Cristo from Highland/Melbourne.
