Continuing in our series on Perth’s local DJ’s, this profile concentrates on another newcomer, Cee. Although a newcomer to DJing, Cee’s background to dance music reaches back further than most. Starting with an avid interest in hip hop in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, he was a regular attendee at seminal Perth dance clubs Berlin; Elevations; Limbo’s and Aqua amongst others.

Still going strong 10 years later, you will more often find Cee up the
front of a deep house or techno dancefloor, than behind the decks. This is changing, though, as he is beginning to get an increasing number of sets around town. Dropping deep house and techno (not together though!) – if you want to check his form, stay tuned to upcoming Delirium playlists. Better yet, get down to Koo Day Tah at the Globe on te 16th of February, where Cee will be teaming up with a host of techno locals, for a night of unbridled – all local – mayhem.

Is it “just a fucking phase?” Or, do you think that you will always be involved in dance music in some way?
I have been into dance music ever since I first really discovered music in general. I don’t know if I will always be into what I am now but dance music will always be a part of me.

What are the current labels you favour?
There are too many labels providing great techno and house to narrow it down too much but for house I’d have to say OM and Naked Music.

What do you do in your spare time, or the time that you have when you aren’t DJ’ing?
Working at my real job so I can afford this habit :)

How do you think the Perth scene compares to others in Australia?
I think we have a great scene compared to others in Australia. Great
local talent and a constant flow of 1st class internationals DJ’s.

Who, if anyone, would you drop all your records for a night and go and see if they were playing in Perth and why?
Any quality deep house or techno DJ. I consider myself to be a clubber/DJ groupie first and a DJ second :)

How would you describe the music you play? Is there anything you won’t play?
I mainly play vocal deep house. I also buy techno ranging from Detroit through to a hard European style (such as Redhead) and yes there is a lot I wouldn’t play. I don’t buy a style of music just so I can play out somewhere.

How long have you been playing? How has the sound of what you’ve been playing developed since you started out as a DJ?
Nearly 2 years. My music style hasn’t change too much, just broadened a bit plus I mix a little better now – I hope!

What have been your top 10 tracks of the past year?
1. Silhouettes – Benisch & Mull on Inside on Inside
2. X-102 – Jeff Mills on UR 019.5
3. Body + Soul – Peace Division on Intergroove
4. Do you like the way you feel when you shake? – Angel Alanis
5. White Label – Ali G on flipside
6. Celebrate Life – Mateo & Matos on Large
7. Strings of Life – Plank 15 RMX,
8. Angel – Lionel Richie/Miguel Migs RMX
9. Humanized EP – Redhead on Zync
10. Blue – Endangered species on Primate

What makes a good DJ?
Someone who hasn’t forgotten where and how they started out – someone who never forgets their fans and the people dancing to their tunes.

Do you dance when you are not playing?
Try and stop me. My friends always know where to find me – on the dance floor!!
