STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW
It’s hard to fault Wesley Pentz’s musical pedigree. Better known under his dinosaur-obsessed pseudonym Diplo, he’s established a well-worn reputation as a tastemaker over the past few years, able to quickly spot the ‘next big thing’ at a hundred paces. “All I wanna do is just find new things,” he explained to inthemix. “I’m not the best producer and I’m not the best DJ, but I try to be creative in what I do all the time.”
He’s a man of many hats, having gained a cult following in underground circles for his skills as a DJ, producer, label owner, remixer and party promoter. He hooked up with M.I.A. (both literally and figuratively speaking) before she broke the big time, and he’s since worked closely with everyone from Bonde Do Role through to Spank Rock, Switch, and this year’s hottest new queen, Santogold.
His latest musical project also involves the latter, teaming up with Santogold for the Top Ranking mixtape, which sees her refashioning many of the tracks from her critically acclaimed debut album in a style more befitting Diplo’s tastes. Running the gamut of styles from hip hop through to dub, new wave and punk, it’s an eclectic listen and the perfect taster for Diplo’s forthcoming tour as part of Parklife.
