German hardstyle expert Blutonium Boy and his production partner Neo will both be representing Blutonium Records this weekend at Transmission, playing back to back in order to deliver a precision dose of hard dance insanity. You can count on their weapons Make It Loud, Paranoid and Hardstyle Instructor all making an appearance, but according to Blutonium Boy himself we can expect a few new surprises. “Our new single Hardstyle Superstar is one of the best productions we ever made,” he told ITM. “So please wear warm dress, because I will present that tune during tour through Australia in September.”

Err… Whoah there! Here at ITM we’re not sure exactly what he meant by that (perhaps he’s predicting his new tunes will send shivers down your spine? Should we brace ourselves for an icy-cold blast of Germanic hardstyle?) but we’re not ones to get in a flap over an interview getting ‘lost in translation’ either. ITM fires up its Babel Fish text translator and speaks to Blutonium Boy.

You’ve been producing music for over 20 years now, is it hard to come up with fresh inspiration after so many years writing music?

For sure not, because it’s my life and I love it, creating and writing new music! I’ve written nearly 150 songs, so I guess there will be a 100 more in the next 20 years. I think the experience traveling so much around the world will continue to provide me with new inspiration in the future, which will see me gorging new arrangements and sounds together with my studio partner Neo.

How much has your music changed over the years? Can you still go back and listen to your old tunes, or are you too critical of your own production from back then?

Half and half, there are some that I really hate (or they make me smile) when I listen to them again. But there are also a few that I think always they are timeless, like Thomas Trouble Echoes or Blutonium Boy Brainshooter and Make It Loud. But of course, the way that I produce a track has changed a lot over the last 15 years. Eight years ago I had a studio with a lot of machines that I paid more than 250,000 Euros for, but three years ago when I changed to producing totally virtual, I only got 20,000 Euros for selling that old studio shit! But if you don’t keep up, you’ll lose the attention of your fans and your career will be over, and you’ll never be coming back! You see, I’m still here and coming out to Australia again after eight amazing tours. And you know what, I have a rocker in my case – the new Blutonium Boy solo single called Hardstyle Superstar and I promise that people will love it!

Why has your sound moved on to hardstyle from trance? Do you think the trance genre had become stale at all?

Trance at the end was a bit to cheesy for me, with a lot of DJs around me fighting with each other and not a lot of gigs, no money in the pocket and a lot of bad mouthing. Hardstyle I think is my real passion, and I will do it untill the end of my career. There are still a few cool trance jocks around the world, like Armin, Tiesto, Rank 1 or Paul van Dyk. I really respect them, and they are still leading a lot of big events, but in reality I reckon the Hardstyle is he the big bomb on earth, and every month we win thousands of new fans for the sound. I’ve got a great relationship with Activator, The Prophet, Pavo, Isaac, Luna, Headhunterz and many more around the globe, because we’re also friends and we help each other all the time without any excuses or questions!

The Hardstyle Nation CD seemed to get a mixed response because it wasn’t strictly a hardstyle release, do you think people can be a little too narrow-minded about their music genres sometimes?

Of course, and this is good though! Here in Europe I saw the same, so the definition of hardstyle is very simple. If you present hardstyle, it must be 100 per cent and if not you loose respect! I love the people who are narrow-minded about their music genres.

You’ve done quite a bit of production work with DJ Neo over the years, how does your working partnership work? What does he bring to the music that makes it different from your own productions?

Neo is my little brother, friend and partner. Sometimes we hate each other, sometimes we hang out like best friends. In the time we’ve worked together I’ve taught him all that I know, and together with his talent we’ve produced more than 120 productions in the last six years. He’s the sound expert and I am the DJ, so this mix is perfect and during the years he saw how I worked with the crowd on the floor at many events that I took him to. He felt the atmosphere that’s created when we perform, and so he found out sort of production is needed for a real club anthem, that people will react to and not get bored of!

What production projects do you have happening at the moment? Is there any chance we might see a Blutonium Boy solo artist album one day?

At the moment we’ve finished a solo album from Blutonium Boy called Hardstyle Dimension, and I’ve heard that Ministry of Sound will be putting it out during or after my tour of Australia too. In Europe it’s still released on ZYX. Also we’ve finished some new tracks like my new solo effort I talked about it before. Hardstyle Superstar is one of the best productions we’ve ever made, so please wear warm dress because I will present that tune during tour of Australia in September. Also I’ve got a new producer in my team, his name is Maly and he is from Israel and so talented! I will put out his first tune out in October which is called This Is Our Life/Only Human.

Finally, what can we expect to hear from you on your Australian tour?

All I want to say is that you should come and celebrate with Neo and I, we’ll have a lot of fun together for sure!

Catch Blutonium Boy going head to head with Neo this Saturday 27th September when Transmission returns to the State Sports Centre.

Haha, try doing a bit of research before an interview. Blutonium Boy's solo album came out at the start of the year.
