STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW
More than 20 years behind the decks. Countless tours around the globe. A consistent fixture on the DJ Mag Top 100 poll. With such a successful career already behind him, you couldn’t be blamed for wondering how many more peaks there were left to hit for this dance music stalwart. But Carl Cox is most definitely hitting a peak in 2008. Anyone who witnessed his power-house sets at the Big Day Out’s Boiler Room earlier this year will know that Coxxie is in a special place at the moment.
“I really enjoy playing at the Big Day Out, a lot of people are left with the impression that they’ve been out and had a good time,” he told ITM. “It was a tough call for me because I was more or less on at the same time as Rage Against the Machine, but it was nice to know that I had a good strong crowd that was there for my performance. So I gave it my all at every singe party that I could.”
And from all the reports that flooded back from the Ibiza Summer season this year, he absolutely nailed it over on the Spanish isle as well. The punters are singing his praises, and Carl Cox is well and truly owning it in ‘08. Looking back to his Boiler Room sets again to get an idea exactly as to why, his musical choices are eclectic as ever. While in years past he’d become known as a DJ who worked from a groundwork of bangin’ techno, what the 30,000+ strong crowds heard in January was a much wider assortment with breaks, house, electro and even trance thrown smoothly into the mix.
“If I just stuck to one particular style or era of who I am as a DJ, then I would say that I wouldn’t have developed myself after all these years. For me, I’m still chasing that new music, that new sound… and also still creating the party that I think people should have,” he told ITM. “It certainly isn’t over yet.”
It looks like the passion and energy levels are redlining just as much as they ever have. As Cox prepares to head back to his ‘new home’ of Australia late next month to play at Stereosonic’s debut on the national stage, sharing the duties with fellow heavyweights like Paul van Dyk and Booka Shade, ITM’s Angus Paterson finds out from the big man himself exactly what’s been happening in 2008.
