Started DJing?
I bought my turntables separate last year, my second one came into my hands in March last year, I started by mixing my one turntable into my CD player until I could save up for my second deck. My first gig was at Spy bar last year in June(?).
How did you learn to DJ?
I listened to a lot of mix CD’s and saw a lot of DJ’s. I listened to the mixes at work and at home and tried to mimic their style. My first few months were really pathetic, however one day I picked up bar mixing (if that’s what you’d call it) by accident and went from there.
Give your DJ style a tacky catch phrase:
Lyntesque.
DJ Residencies:
Spy Bar: June(?) 2001 -> Sept(?) 2001
Fresh Sessions @ E-55: October 2001 -> current
OoO @ Lounge: December 2001 -> current
Rubberscience @ Room680: February 2002 -> current
Best DJ gig:
It’s a tie between OoO and Fresh Sessions, each is on a different angle. I love playing to a dancefloor, and I also love playing to a bar crowd. My box is from one end of the scale to the other. From laidback and minimal breakbeat, to dancefloor ‘destroyers’. It’s all good, and I’m lucky I get to play both ends at both parties.
Worst DJ gig:
None, it’s all good experience! (Even when you get hassled for 303 Acid all night and then get abused!).
What are the top 3 tunes in your box right now?
Tough!
1. Proper Filthy Naughty – Future Burn (Proper Beats Mix)
2. HMP feat. MC Marshall – Rolling Touch
3. Skeewiff – Silently Losing the Plot
Other DJs that influence you:
All the Melbourne crew, I always try my best to catch the breaks parties. I think it’s healthy to check out what your neighbour is up to, I think if you shut yourself out of other peoples handywork you never progress.
I also look up to Tayo – he was a big influence when I started playing
simply because I dug all the same tunes as he was playing (I was a
Groovetech Radio addict), also Adam Freeland who has a great ability to flow around the breaks. Brewster B who has a knack for party rock-a-bility and Phil K who very intuitive with his work.
Favourite record labels:
Straight up, in no order: TCR, Mob, Botchit, Whole 9 Yards and Inflight Entertainment (now deceased!) :-(
Favourite artists:
Anything Danny McMillan puts out, Kevin Beber, FreQ Nasty, Nu Breed, B.L.I.M + Pilgrem (the unstoppable duo), Chris Carter… stacks!
What is RubberScience and the Fresh Sessions?
Rubberscience is a breakbeat weekly which is just coming into place in Feb. It isn’t a standard night persay, but more of a showcase. We are getting artists to put up their work around the venue, whom in which we will profile on the website, also each week profile a new DJ and give them the guest spot. There are a stack of up and coming DJ’s in Melbourne and I think everyone deserves a clean break (pun action 101). With the accessablity and popularity of the internet with the breaks crews, the website will become the source of information for the night.
We’ll record every guest spot, archive and place them on the site, also interview the guest and profile them on the site. I don’t think any other night is doing that.
The Fresh Sessions is a weekly net radio show I host with Jitterbug. We play 2 hours of breaks, as much new stuff as we can fit in as well as ‘what ever the hell you feel like’. It’s slowly taking off, we will incorporate the two gigs together eventually.
What does RubberScience mean, and who came up with that funky name?
Rubberscience means nothing! I was putting words together one day (as you do), and it popped out of my head. Initialiy the idea for rubberscience.com was to showcase the breaks DJ’s in Melbourne, this is what I get to do now, as well as run a night.
Tell me a little bit about your new night at Room680:
We want to cover the whole spectrum. From old-skool, to laidback beats, to nu-skool, maybe even drum and bass. I’m currently gathering the Dj’s who wish to play, it looks healthy so far (you’ll have to check the website for the calendar)
It will be $5 on entry, and there’s an awesome VIP section with sunken couches and velvety stuff, as well as a breaker friendly dance-floor for those who wish to cut some rug. So you don’t feel like you have to dance, you can sip alcohol and listen instead. I wanted a place to chill and to dance without feeling like you’re in a club (even though you are).
What do you get up to when you’re not DJing?
Right now, Playstation 2 has taken over my life. Working with Rubberscience takes up the majority of my time, as well as my full time job as a web developer. Full time and DJ’ing is rough, I wouldn’t recommend it to the light-hearted. No sleep.
