STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW
There are not many people who can lay claim to coining their own genre of music, but back when the ‘nu-rave’ in-joke was just a twinkle in the eyes’ of a few pre-pubescent Klaxons, NYC club impresario Larry Tee cemented the term ‘electroclash’. It very quickly took on a life of its own, and almost instantly became one of the most hyped strains of club music worldwide, giving artists like Fischerspooner and Chicks on Speed a platform to exhibit their inimitable mesh of music, art and fashion.
As luck would have it, the whole thing happened pretty much by accident, but it’s perhaps symptomatic of Larry’s profile in the NYC club scene, with the DJ, producer and promoter having been around since the ‘dawn of time’ (his words, not ours!) “I actually own the word electroclash!” Larry laughed when talking with inthemix recently, ahead of his Global Gathering tour this month. “Not because I wanted to own the word… but I created it for a festival, so I trademarked it so that I could use it again.”
A festival that spawned its own genre of music? Well, now we’ve heard everything! Tune in to hear the full interview with Larry, where he talks about his Michael Alig ‘Party Monster’ days, upcoming tour down under, and forthcoming album Club Badd.
