STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW
You might know him as one half of Riot In Belgium or as a member of the notorious Bang Gang posse, but if the newly single Beni has his way you’ll soon recognise his name as a solo artist first and foremost. With Riot In Belgium now defunct, Beni’s been hard at work establishing his identity under his own moniker. “The response has been very overwhelming,” Beni says of his newfound freedom. “It’s really nice!”
The first glimpse of Beni’s newfound solo brilliance is his debut single with the acclaimed French label Kitsune, My Love Sees You. It’s been getting big props internationally, with A-Trak even going so far as to name it one of his favourite tracks of 2008. As a result Beni’s been busy taking it throughout Europe, even heading up the recent launch tour for the new Kitsune Maison 6 compilation (which the track features on, naturally).
“At the time when I started doing the solo thing I didn’t want to do something that was like everything else,” he says when asked about what inspired the track’s more ‘organic’ sound, with its elastic bassline central to its lazy but bumping funk approach. “The [noisy French electro] sound is a bit done, in all due respect. It’s all amazing, but it’s been around and so many people have copied it.”
Let My Love See You and Kitsune Maison 6 are both out now on Kitsune, available locally through etcetc/Universal.
