Call him an enigma, a musical aficionado or even an aural sensationalist. Whatever you call him, Chuck Love has been defining musical boundaries since his introduction into the music industry. The man behind a string of releases is embarking once again to Australia, joined by swags of tasty production and many musical instruments to accompany.
And this house music maestro is one hell of a performer. Combining his DJ sets with trumpets, flutes, guitar and whatever else he can find in the music room, his articulate sets give any dance floor a new definition. “I really started as a live performer before anything else,” Chuck said. “First in rock bands, then as an electronic live PA type of thing and then as the instrumentalist with other people spinning. All of this was done before I ever took up DJing myself. I always approached DJing as support for my performance similar to an Extreme Karaoke style. The live instruments are something that does identify me, and sets me apart from other DJs.”
Notorious for playing predominately house sets, Chuck concedes he has no fear when perpetrating other genres. In the wake of a massive electro revolution that’s beginning to lose its way, Chuck encompasses what the massive music spectrum has to offer. “I will touch on a broader spectrum than just what we associate with house,” he said. “Minimal, electro, progressive, fidget, whatever you want to call it I will find a time and a place to bust it out and integrate it into what I do.”
With a career that is yet to hit a crescendo, Chuck feels his learning game is still unfolding. “Finding the balance between traveling and playing shows, producing in the studio, and continuing to promote all of the efforts but I’m still workin’ on it! I think the biggest lesson to learn out of all of this is to enjoy it and keep perspective on just how cool dance music is. I have a worldwide fan-base that supports me in playing music on big-ass sound systems and that itself is amazing. If I keep that in mind I won’t take myself too seriously.”
This year, in 2009, with an Australian tour quickly looming, Chuck reveals that more production is awaiting the year ahead. “I will also try and find some new ways to deliver my music whether it’s video, or an application or something interactive. I will be flexing my AV geek skills as a sound designer and video editor as part of the release profile as well as the live show.”
Catch Chuck Love when he plays the Overflow at the Bay Festival in Adelaide this weekend.
