STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW
Portuguese outfit Buraka Som Sistema have wasted absolutely no time in stamping out their influence on the worldwide club music scene, amassing a collection of rather powerful friends in all the right places. Before their acclaimed debut album Black Diamond had hit stores they had already gaining solid props from iconic tastemakers like Diplo, M.I.A., Switch and Santogold.
Released late in 2008, Black Diamond well and truly delivered on the hype, even managing to sneak onto many of the year’s ‘best of’ lists (including inthemix’s collection of 2008 top 20 albums here). It was preceded by the chaotic, animalistic rhythm of their mission statement – and the album’s first single – Sound Of Kuduro, which featured the aforementioned M.I.A. on the hook.
Thankfully, it seems that Buraka Som Sistema have the chops to back it all up live – US magazine Fader call their show “one of the most jaw-droppingly effusive club moments we’ve experienced” – and they’re finally bringing the MC/DJ experience to Australia for their first ever antipodean tour. inthemix gets the lowdown.
Buraka Som Sistema play the following Australian shows over the coming weeks:
Jan 30 – Beck’s Festival Bar, Sydney
Jan 31 – Laneway Festival, Brisbane
Feb 1 – Laneway Festival, Melbourne
Feb 4 – SoCo Cargo, Melbourne
Feb 6 – Laneway Festival, Perth
Feb 7 – Laneway Festival, Adelaide
Feb 8 – Laneway Festival, Sydney
