STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW

In a year that was otherwise bereft of inspiration for lovers of excellent breakbeat, UK DJ/producer duo the Stanton Warriors bucked the trend by having what was arguably their best year yet. Their tour schedule was packed, and in October they consolidated their ongoing success with the release of Stanton Sessions Vol. 3. It drew together all of the originals, edits, remixes and redubs they’d been rocking over the past 18 months, and by the time 2008 drew to a close it easily took the crown as one of the year’s best and most groundbreaking dance releases.

Stanton Sessions Vol. 3 was a revelation for breakbeat fans in particular, who’d otherwise been starved of quality releases recently. “There’s a real lack of good breakbeat out there. I love the breakbeat genre, and the wider sounds that are incorporated within that loose umbrella. But there just hasn’t been enough, to be really honest about it,” the Stantons told ITM late last year. “If putting out albums like this helps that situation and gets people enthused… then it’s all gonna be good and healthy for the scene. It’s a great genre, and it’s one that you can do so much with.”

Where Stanton Sessions Vol. 3 got it so right was its innovative approach in bringing different sounds and genres into the breakbeat fold, and the Stantons say they’re committed to showing the way forward. “We are flying the flag. We haven’t given in, we’re not playing 30 per cent house in our sets or token dubstep tunes. We’re sticking with our formula of broken beats 100 per cent… When all is said and done, we’ve put a lot of years, time and effort into the sound. We’re in it for life, and we definitely want to see the whole thing move forward.”

ITM’s Angus Paterson spoke to Dominic B of the duo recently about Stanton Sessions Vol. 3, their tour with the Good Vibrations Festival this month, and what they think it’ll take to bring back breakbeat.

Stay tuned for part 2 of our conversation with the Stanton Warriors coming soon, and don’t forge to catch them on the Good Vibrations tour throughout February, presented by inthemix!

"In a year that was otherwise bereft of inspiration for lovers of excellent breakbeat" !? (cough) You're obviously not listening hard enough. Plenty of wicked breaks out there.
