Did you get stood up by Eric Prydz over New Years? Me too. And while that wound may never heal, we’re all about to get one hell of a sympathy fuck in the form of Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello’s tour as part of the Future Music Festival.
But given the opportunity to interview Ingrosso, I had to ask about his mate Eric. What the hell happened? “I knew that was going to come up! I’ve been waiting to get asked about that!” Ingrosso laughed. “He’s been really good actually, we just spent about a month together in Sweden, just making music and hanging out. He’s just produced a few new records, they’re very good.
“He’s a good guy, he’s doing really well, he’s just, you know, not so good with the flying.” Yes, we’ve heard.
Ingrosso on the other hand, is more than happy to get on a plane to entertain the masses. Heading down for the third time in as many years to do a full national tour with the Future Music Festival, he’s joining heavyweights such as Richie Hawtin, Etienne de Crecy, Tocadisco and more.
Rumours had been circulating since the announcement of the Future Music line up that, unlike all the other times they’ve toured Oz, Ingrosso and long, long, longterm DJ buddy Steve Angello would not be playing together when they arrive at the end of this month. Ingrosso was as shocked to hear this as we were, and rapidly put the rumour to rest. “No, we’re definitely playing together! I have no idea why anyone would say that we’re not! I think I better call my agent!”
Angello onside or not, Ingrosso has in recent times expressed a desire to scale back his DJing and spend more time in the studio. His recent productions have certainly been getting darker and heavier; productions like Chaa Chaa and Get Dumb showing a more twisted side of Ingrosso than we’ve seen before. This dark touch has also been lent to Justin Timberlake: the remix of My Love has been referred to as Angello and Ingrosso’s “smartest remix to date… a masterclass of low-slung bass and thundering drums that Jacques Lu Cont would be proud of”. When Ingrosso was originally approached for the remix, the label wanted a straight up and down house remix of the RnB track. Ingrosso was having none of that.
“They asked for just a basic house remix, but I wanted to do something epic and mystical. You can feel the vibe in the original track, and we just wanted to go with that, really make something out of it. We always want to surprise ourselves as producers – we’re quite tough on ourselves! And we were really, really happy with how this track came out.”
If you think Justin Timberlake and Sebastian Ingrosso are an unlikely pair, try getting your head around Ingrosso and Steve Angello pairing up with some of Britney and Madonna’s producers, for a project they’re calling Music Murder. Their first releases will be coming out in March, so Australian audiences could well be the first to hear them, although even Ingrosso himself can’t tell you what they’ll sound like. “Umm, well… I don’t know how to describe it! It’s really cool, I really like it… I can’t quite put my finger on it… I think everyone will like it though! It’s very cool!”
Although he’s keen to DJ less in favour of focusing on production, Ingrosso is atypically vague when asked if he’ll ever give up DJing entirely, although unlike certain ‘luminaries’, he’s adamant he won’t be spinning from his Zimmerframe.
“Someday I guess I will stop – I won’t be there when I’m 50. But then again, you never know! You get addicted to the crowd and the party – it’s so much fun, it’s just the biggest thing ever, every weekend. I don’t know if I’ll ever give it up – but we’ll see!”
