STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEWS
You’ll know the formula by now, established solidly by DJ/producer Simon Patterson with his unholy trinity of singles that includes Bulldozer, Thump and of course, last year’s devastating anthem Smack. Beginning with a solid club drive, it flattens out into a breakdown that’s about as euphoric and uplifting as it gets… Before the beat drops again, and he throws your expectations out the window by slamming back into a hard-as-nails riff that rips the dancefloor apart. He might have been working with the same basic idea, but that’s only because it’s so damn effective.
“I stumbled across a style, and a sound, that works,” Simon told ITM. “People were making purist trance with big melodies, but I was lucky to nail a style that was a bit different and especially for the clubs and big rooms, it really, really works. People love that melodic breakdown and then kicking in with beats and bass… I’m lucky that my sound was one of the sounds of last year, and hopefully I can continue it.”
ITM’s Angus Paterson talked with Simon Patterson (no relation) earlier this month in Holland, a mere couple of hours before he was due to hit the stage at Trance Energy, what he describes as “without a doubt the best trance event in the world”. But he told us he’s nearly just as excited to be part of the brand’s launch in Australia over Easter. So what can we expect? “Driving, techy trance. Nails, pure nails.”
Simon Patterson tours Australia with Trance Energy in April:
Thu 9 Apr – Sydney, Hordern Pavilion & Surrounds
Fri 10 Apr – Melbourne, Calder Park Thunderdome
Sat 11 Apr – Brisbane, Riverstage.
Sun 12 Apr – Perth, Belvoir Amphitheatre
