STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW
With his debut artist album What Do You Do If You Don’t? hitting the shelves, Jesse Rose is on his way back to Australia. Lots of terms have been created to deal with Rose and his producer brethren – fidget house and hyphy house being two of the most popular. But What Do You Do If You Don’t? throws them all back into the blender, and injects a great dose of fun to keep things suitably exciting.
The album opens with a cut down version of Forget My Name (featuring Hot Chip). It’s got a punchier feel than the 12” that got such a heavy airing in the clubs, and it introduces the album perfectly. But he instantly flips things on their head (arguably in true ‘fidget’ style) with the quirky Well Now, throwing a gypsy style beat into the ring. Pop Yer Porn pushes things in the harder realm and the middle of the record is held down by these club oriented tracks, but he rounds it out with the fun of Touch My Horn and the beautiful lounge-house track Never Ending (also featuring Hot Chip).
Rose creates a journey with What Do You Do If You Don’t?, rather than just a collection of dance tracks. It’s much like his DJ mixes – they’re smooth, but not so smooth that they are bland and they always have a great bounce to them. And as he tells inthemix: “I really want to push house music to Australia. To push a more underground sound that they might not have heard before.” ITM’s Simon Hampson finds out more.
