This coming Friday night, Adelaide will be celebrating a major milestone for the trance community, with the Global Trance radio show celebrating its 200th episode! Blasting the airwaves since 2005 and playing latest trance from around the globe to fans across the country 9as well as being syndicated as far as Romania, Greece and America), Brett James and DJ Contagious are the ones who have been bringing it to us. Here they sit down with ITM to tell us all about their exciting adventures across the airwaves.

Congratulations on the achievement of reaching 200 episodes! Did you ever think Global Trance would accumulate so many?

To be honest we didn’t even start the show with episode numbers, just dates. Hitting 200 is certainly something of an achievement, and our next goal is 250 and a big party!

Global Trance has certainly made its mark world wide, how many places does the show currently broadcast to?

Hmmm, let me see. South Australia, Victoria, NSW, Queensland, Western Australia, Romania, Greece, Turkey, Norway and numerous stations in the USA including Illinois, Florida and a load of online stations, including our newest station coming online soon on clubbersradio.com

How long has Global Trance been on the airwaves and how was it first formed?

Almost 200 weeks ago, so that’s four years! WOW. That is a while. It started back in 2005 with Brett James and DJ Inferno and their passion for playing Trance to as many people as possible. Fresh FM allowed our concept to commence prime time Saturday nights and the response was massive!

Upon forming Global Trance, what was your initial intention for the show?

Just to take that underground sound to the people of Adelaide who had no other avenue for getting a dose of Tiesto inspired radio magic.

Did it take a while to gain support behind the show?

I have to say the show was an instant success with a monstrous immediate following. Within weeks we had a GT crew donning t-shirts and showing their support all around Adelaide. That crew are now those responsible for contributing a major part to the trance scene in Adelaide today.

Brett James, I understand that you were running the show solo every Friday night for quite some time which is quiet a sacrifice, when and what made you choose to have a co-host?

Well when GT started syndicating to other stations abroad, I found myself fast running out of hours each week to put it all together, and knowing well that one day retirement would set in, I started thinking about succession. I quite liked the idea of someone to help keep things fun and make things a little more entertaining than the standard trance show we hear elsewhere.

Did it take a long time to find the right co-host and if so what made you choose DJ Contagious?

To be honest it wasn’t really a tough choice, more a case of making room for him to showcase his talent. It was probably more a case that I saw Pauly’s passion and talent as an absolute opportunity for the show to go to the next level. I’d always find myself drawn into his sets out in the clubs, his guest mixes and promos, and thought this guy really knows his shit! Apart from being an all round top bloke, I honestly couldn’t see anyone else that I could trust to fill the role so perfectly especially with our ridiculously similar music tastes.

What’s actually involved in finding the tracks each week and how many hours do you both spend trying to collaborate the right sound for each show?

With such a large broadcast, the music finds us. Artists and labels send dozens of emails every week, we just sample and download what we like. About 1gig each week of music comes through, and only a handful can make it on the tracklist. Contagious patrols those releases we may not get as promos and hunts down those absolute corkers we love so much, and I spend a lot of time (too much) sending responses to artists and labels that need the feedback.

I understand you like to broadcast a lot of unreleased tunes on the show, how has this helped artists trying to get their sound out there?

Basically we play what we love. Not necessarily what Armin or Tiesto plays, but those tunes that need the support, which may not be getting it elsewhere. We have many contacts that send their tracks through directly, long before they are released or even signed to a label. I’ve seen the GT name used in many places when artists have been aiming to promote their work, so it’s great knowing we are doing our bit to help them sell their sound. I know we have some tunes that the big boys probably don’t even know exist, and we love the fact we have that as a point of difference.

Do you think the trance scene in Adelaide has benefited from Global Trance’s airplay?

Absolutely! There are guys and girls out there today helping run the scene that first got involved when GT first took the scene by storm. Most of them met via Global Trance. It’s been a medium to promote the sound and help unite people with that one common interest, TRANCE! Honestly, when you think Trance in Adelaide what’s the first thing you think of? Just Google it, Wikipedia it, you can’t hide the fact that GT has played a big role. 2 hours every single week for the last 4 years, it’s pretty much the only constant in the local trance scene that everyone has been able to rely on without fail since 2005.

What do you hope the future holds for Global Trance?

Well the syndication is still growing, and the plan is to keep putting Adelaide on the map. With international recognition, we seem to have a massive credit overseas, and that’s only going to help make Adelaide bigger. Would be really nice to see us as a main Act at a local event one day, instead of just a supporting act. The main goal is grow the listener base beyond its current massive listener base and continue to support those in Adelaide that support us!

Tune into Fresh FM Adelaide on Friday 22nd May from 8pm for a special Global Trance 4-hour extravaganza!
