STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW
The one we know as ‘The Kid’ has been keeping a touch quiet as of late, but he’s about to pump the volume back up once again. Australia’s golden boy of clubbing Kid Kenobi is back with his first compilation in two years, and his first since he parted ways with the Ministry of Sound stable. Klub Kids 01 is a double-disc affair, with the first CD featuring the sort of big-room electro and fidget we’ve been hearing in his sets lately, while the second sees him dropping the BPMs for some downtempo grooves. More importantly though, it represents the launching pad for his record label of the same name.
“It’s the first time I’ve done it independently,” Kid Kenobi told ITM. “Obviously it’s coming out on my label so it was a massive learning curve, doing the whole thing on your own and dealing with record labels, and licensing tunes. It’s this whole other side to the industry that you’re aware of, but you don’t know in enough details to be in charge of it.”
However, Klub Kids 01 sees Kid Kenobi well and truly taking charge of his destiny, featuring plenty of his own productions which he says is a sign of things toi come. “I was getting to a point last year where I was getting really, really motivated in the studio… I’d been talking about it for a while, but I really wanted to make a commitment… and what I wanted was a direct outlet for my music.”
So let’s welcome Kid Kenobi’s Klub Kids to the fold of Australian independent dance labels. ITM’s Angus Paterson talks to Kid Kenobi about his brand new adventure, the ‘fidgety’ place that he’s found himself musically at the moment, as well as shedding some light on his attitude to the inthemix50 DJ poll in 2009.
