STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW
We’ve waited long enough, but the return of Australia’s seminal electronic live act Infusion is nigh. This month their long-awaited new album All Night Sun Light will finally see the light of day, and it sees them taking the organic/electronic fusion one step further. You could argue it’s a logical extension of what we heard on 2004’s Six Feet Above Yesterday: the trio have their roots in electronic music, but that’s coupled with a ‘song-based’ mentality that’s decidedly pop/rock.
“There’s still that want for sounding new, and utilising those electronics,” the trio’s Jamie Stevens told ITM. “But we felt a bit braver in the way we united that traditional song mentality with something that pushes those sounds a little bit further.”
All Night Sun Light also comes at an interesting time, musically. Unlike when the mould-breaking Six Feet Above Yesterday hit the shelves earlier in the decade, audiences have well and truly embraced the indie-dance fusion, and bands like Cut Copy and The Presets are among the most popular in the country. “The only time we think about that is when we think back to who was around when we started, using this kind of technology and doing it in that live way… it’s a different world now, it’s great. There were lots and lots of frowns when we first started, so it’s kind of nice not to have that anymore,” he laughed.
To really see where they’re coming from though, you’ll need to actually catch them in a live setting. And you’ll have your chance, as Infusion will be on the road for the rest of the month taking All Night Sun Light to the nation. ITM’s Angus Paterson finds out a little bit more about what they’ve got in store for this year.
