Noisecontrollers consists of Bas Oskam and Arjan Terpstra, both with completely different music backgrounds but together, they’re making one hell of a hardstyle racket. Making noise since 2005 with their debut release of DJS Records called Wanna Freak You, they hit the big time a few eyars alter with Crump and Aliens. No stranger to Australian crowds, they’ll be here this weekend for the debut of the Defqon.1 Festival. ITM talks to the pair about how much noise they’re going to make.
Hi guys, you’re talking to inthemix in Australia. How’s it hanging, and how has your year been going so far?
Hi! It has been a fantastic year so far. We played on every big event and almost every main stage so far and have some big gigs coming up, like Defqon.1 in Australia! Also our latest release is doing very well on the dance floor and the new release, the Surge Of Power EP, is already scheduled for September this year.
Coming from different backgrounds, what difference did you guys notice in your approach to the music when you first started up Noisecontrollers?
Bas has his roots in hard trance and hardcore and me, Arjan, I have my roots in classical music and hip hop. We both have our own strength and weaknesses and when you combine those two we have a perfect match.
What is it about hardstyle and hand dance that you two both love so much and when performing, and what does it hold over other dance genres do you think?
It’s energetic and exhilarating! And we love the deep bass and the euphoric melodies and it’s such a rush when you see the crowd go crazy especially when it’s one of our own tracks!
2007 through to 2008 saw a succession of hits from you guys including Crump, Aliens, Shreek, Venom and Rushroom. It was a pretty solid run, were you feeling particularly creative at the time and what else do you have coming up?
We both love to produce hardstyle and that’s the most important thing! And we make music we like and a lot of hardstyle fans too! We just released the vinyl Yellow Minute and we have a new EP called Surge Of Power ready with 8 new tracks.
What do you see as the future of hardstyle and hard dance music, do you think we’ll see any changes in terms of it becoming increasingly more popular?
Hardstyle is becoming more popular already, a good thing! And it’s great that Australia already has such a huge growing hardstyle scene.
Do you feel that since starting Noisecontrollers in 2005 that you’ve evolved a lot as musicians, have you considered working together a big learning experience for the both of you? And can we expect to hear a change in your music come the future?
Yes it’s a big learning experience since we both have such a different background. So we both learned a lot from each other and still do! We always try new and different things in hardstyle. Create new kinds of melodies, harmonies, kicks, sound FX but still keep our own sound in it.
What are your feelings on performing live at the debut of the Defqon.1 Festival in Australia in September, and do you think it will stack up to Defqon .1 in Holland earlier this year?
Of course we are very excited to perform at the first Defqon.1 in Australia. The lineup is great, the show, the people there are amazing (last year the crowd was awesome) so we think it will be a great success!
The Defqon.1 Festival comes to the Sydney International Regatta Centre on Saturday September 19th. Tickets on sale now from tickets.q-dance.com.au, check out the trailer below…
