And the Balance series keeps on delivering. The crew from EQ Recordings shook the foundations earlier this year when they released Joris Voorn’s groundbreaking Balance 014, so they were always going to face a challenge in finding a DJ who could live up to its impact. UK deep house maestro Will Saul may at first glance seem like an unusual choice for the series, but it was a calculated decision that looks like it’s paying off. There’s something special happening in ‘deep’ music this year, and Will Saul captures that perfectly with Balance 015.

“You can really feel the reaction,” Will told ITM, excited by the opportunity to have showcased his sound so comprehensively across three CDs. “There’s a lot of interest because of the heritage of the series, so straight away that opens a door you wouldn’t normally get. That also does increase the pressure to perform… But it’s an amazing opportunity and I’m incredibly grateful for it.”

The key to Will Saul’s Balance, and what he manages to nail so effectively, is that while he may be known as a house DJ first and foremost, the label ‘deep’ is one that carries right across the musical the musical spectrum. “I did aim to cover a lot of ground, firstly because that’s my taste in music, and I wanted to showcase as wide a range as I could. I also I think it’ll give it more longevity if people can feel that thread of deepness running through all the different genres… it should mean people keep coming back to it.”

With his launch tour kicking off in Australia this weekend, Will Saul talks to ITM’s Angus Paterson about his new balance CD as well as what ‘deep’ means in 2009.
