STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW

Having moved to Melbourne several years ago where he lives for several months of the year, superstar DJ veteran Carl Cox is certainly no stranger to the Australian summer. Every year he usually takes a top-of-the-line billing on a national festival lineup, be it Big Day Out, Stereosonic or Future Music Festival, but it’s a measure of his success that his sets are still awaited with the same anticipation of any other massive international superstar DJ. In 2009, Carl Cox has still definitely got ‘it’.

He’s currently working on his new album in his Melbourne studio, but he says that the Australian summer can sometimes bring its distractions. “Coming here in the summer can sometimes be the worst time for me to try and make music because it’s too hot, there are too many girls on the beach in bikinis, and there’s way too many BBQs and festivals going on,” he laughs. “I mean, how am I meant to be stuck in the studio when we’ve got all this stuff going on outside? It’s just not possible.”

The solution? Fly into Australia even earlier, knuckle down in the studio and get the album done before he embarks on his annual onslaught to smash the shit out of our festivals and events. And that’s exactly what he’s done this year. With the New Year party celebrations drawing ever closer, ITM’s Angus Paterson talks to the king of the Australian summer Carl Cox as he’s fine tuning his new album in his Melbourne studio, and preparing for the big gigs that are to come.
