STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW

Mark Farina is a man who lives and breathes house music, staying true to the roots of the genre and always bucking the trend of whatever is ‘hot’ in clubland at the time. Getting his start in the late 80s alongside fellow Chicago native Derrick Carter, Farina now bases himself in San Francisco, heading up his own Great Lakes Audio record label in between jaunts across the US and beyond to spread the word of serious underground house.

Known for much more than a simple 4/4 sound, Farina is also revered for his Mushroom Jazz sets, which see him throwing acid jazz infused sounds with organic West Coast urban beats. So popular is Farina’s sideline sound, he started a weekly club night under the name and has released a series of seminal mix CDs through the Om Records label. A recurring visitor to Australian shores, he’s preparing to head back this weekend for a club show in Melbourne and a festival set at Playground Weekender just outside Sydney. ITM thought it was high time we caught up for a chat.

Don’t miss Mark Farina when he pops into town this month:

Fri Feb 19 – Prince of Wales, Melbourne
Sun Feb 21 – Playground Weekender, NSW
