No other Queensland DJ is quite as lauded right now as tyDi. With his first residency at Queensland’s #1 Club The Family at the tender age of 18, he’s gone on to be signed to Armin van Buuren’s label Armada, toured for Trance Energy in Holland and taken out the #1 spot in the sony inthemix50 for both 2008 and 2009.
He’s now nominated for #1 Breakthrough DJ at the 2010 International Dance Music Awards. Yes indeed – with local talents like tyDi going international, Brisbane can think global.
tyDi’s first global mission for 2010 will be the Miami Winter Music Conference, where he has been nominated for #1 Breakthrough DJ alongside other luminaries like Boys Noize, Gui Boratto and Joris Voorn. The 2010 WMC will be his first opportunity to face many DJ/producers with whom he has worked online yet never had the chance to shake hands. “It will be a great opportunity to meet everyone,” he asserts. “I’ll be able to put a face to the name. It’s gonna be a huge party!”
tyDi will indeed continue to lead the party, though he always keeps aside the time to write and produce his own tracks. Flushed with the success of his debut album reaching #2 on the Australian Dance Charts last year, tyDi is obviously looking to album number two – which he promises is not too far away. “In 2009, I was writing so many tracks and I was immediately releasing them online,” he reveals. “But in 2010, for my next album, I’ll be keeping them under my belt. It will be a new experience with new material.”
inthemix can also disclose that tyDi will be working on the next Ministry of Sound Trance Nation album – a project to be released in the next few months.
This week, fresh from touring Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur, tyDi is preparing for a more local move. While he has played for four years at one of the most coveted residencies in Brisbane, this Friday night sees tyDi take a trip around the block to The Met, where he will be launching his new radio show Global Soundsystem live.
At just 18 weeks old, Global Soundsystem has added to tyDi’s calibre as an international identity. “Over the last two years, I had been getting flooded with requests to play in cities from as far away as Romania to Brazil,” he says. “My fan-base has really spread. My radio show gives my fans anywhere in the world the chance to hear a tyDi set. Global Soundsystem can now be heard in 20 countries around the world and the iTunes podcast gets over one hundred downloads. This is far more than I could ever have expected.
“Now, I’m looking out for new tunes and tracks,” he comments. “I’m committed to producing a two-hour set each week. The big guys, the big labels and the big names are sending me new stuff all the time. I’ve always been looking for these anyway – but now, the pressure is really on.”
With a promise for a “really massive set” on the night, Global Soundsystem will really be something for Brisbane’s dance community. “This will be an exciting change,” tyDi enthuses. “I’ve been neglecting Brisbane too much with my touring over the last year. The last two months especially have been a blur. It will be great to be at a new venue – a fresh change.”
But what of his style? tyDi has been a huge purveyor of melodic trance, leading the charge for Fridays @ Family. The last 12 months however, has seen a shift for the DJ. “I’ll be playing a three-hour set and taking everyone through lots of different sounds,” he muses. “I’m not giving a name to my style. It’s still very melodic – just somewhere in the middle of prog-house and trance. I’ll be bringing a different sound to The Met – something different that people can experience. I have lots of new material. I’m really looking forward to it!”
The Met in Brisbane welcomes tyDi for an exclusive three-hour set, recorded live for Global Soundsystem on Friday 5 March.
