Stephane Queme – known to lovers of French house as DJ Falcon – personifies joie de vivre. The man responsible for the enduring anthem Together alongside Thomas Bangalter now spends his time travelling the world to DJ, surf and hone his skills as a photographer.
Sounds like quite the life, doesn’t it? Falcon evidently agrees, even if the constant globe-trotting has meant his production output has slowed in recent years. However, as inthemix discovers, new collaborative material with electro heavy-hitter Alan Braxe is currently in the making. In the short term, though, it’s more touring for DJ Falcon – with Australia next on the itinerary. ITM hears what’s in store for the high-flyer.
So, what has 2010 held for DJ Falcon so far?
I started working on some new tracks with my cousin, Alan Braxe. I’m really excited about this because so far we have had very similar approach to music. We both started in the same label Roulé Records and both collaborated with Thomas Bangalter, so it feels like it makes so much sense to work together.
Things have been noticeably quiet on the production side of things for you. Any projects coming up you can tell us about?
I’ve been busy travelling the world for DJing and also pursuing photography. I showcased in a couple of exhibitions. Having opportunities to travel the world was something I really wanted to make the most of. I love it so much.
From all your touring experience, what are some of your favourite clubs in the world to play at?
The favourite places to be for me, apart from places I’ve never been, are Japan and especially Australia. That’s simply because I love spending time in those places and also because one of my favourite hobbies is surfing, so you can imagine how happy I am when I visit. Plus, Australian crowds rule.
Having made such classic house anthems with Thomas Bangalter, would the two of you be interested in reviving the ‘Together’ name?
Of course, but at the moment we’re both working on our own projects. It has always been an amazing experience working with Thomas and a lot of fun.
Do you still find house music as exciting now as you did in the ‘90s?
In the ‘90s I was discovering it for the first time so it was extremely exciting for me. These days, it’s more about the crossover of musical style that excites me.
Photography is a passion of yours. Is that something that came about from all your travel?
The name of my exhibition was ‘Falcon’s itineraries’ so oui ,oui. For me it’s also an extension of my curiosity to take photos while I travel. It’s a great way for me to share my experiences with friends and people I meet along the way.
There’s obviously been a lot of exciting stuff coming out of France. What labels in particular are resonating with you?
I can’t really say that there is one label, because within each one there is so much diversity and they don’t always really represent my taste. But if I should mention one artist I would say is SebastiAn – good guy, good sound.
You’ve come to Australia on several occasions over the years. Do you always enjoy the vibe down here?
It will be my eighth time here and guess what – I love it!
