After thundering into Defqon.1 last year, hardstyle dream team Noisecontrollers will return to Sydney this May for Magic City: Unleash The Dragon. The duo (whose mantra ‘don’t expect us to be quiet’ says it all) continue to keep the heavyweight productions coming.
Recently the Dutchmen collaborated with Australia’s very own hardstyle stars Toneshifterz, who they’ll be sharing the Magic City bill with. For their set, though, Noisecontrollers are set to go up against the mighty Donkey Rollers. With the big night fast approaching, inthemix hears all about it.
You were here September last year for Defqon.1, what did you do the rest of your time in Australia?
We missed our flight to Australia, so we had little time to do anything before our Defqon.1 performance. But the day after we toured with all the DJs and Q-dance crew through Sydney in an open bus with loud music. Ha, that was a lot of fun. And we did some sightseeing at the Opera House on our own the second and third day.
How would you describe the Aussie crowd, compared to other countries you have played?
The crowd is so enthusiastic and the response is massive when we play our own tunes. They like our ‘wall of sound’ approach, I guess. And people are really party-minded; the party starts way before they enter the event and lasts till long after the last beat is played.
2009 was a massive year for the Noisecontrollers. How have things been travelling for you so far, and what big plans have you got for the rest of 2010?
Travelling isn’t that bad because there are two of us. I can imagine if you’re alone, it could be quite boring. And we both bought a Macbook Pro so we’re watching universe documentaries all the time. Nerds! For 2010 we’ve got some major gigs coming up in countries like Canada, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and of course, Australia in May.
The Dutch hardstyle scene has a big reputation all of its own, with titans like Zany, the Prophet, Pavo and so on. How would you describe the Noisecontrollers sound?
Of course, those guys inspired us from the very beginning. The typical Noisecontrollers sound is a melodic theme with a raw, deep kick. We try to get the best of both worlds; we have ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ hardstyle tracks but even the softer tracks always have the raw NC touch.
You’ll be playing back to back with the Donkey Rollers at Magic City. What can we expect?
We prepared some nice new NC/DR edits. It’s truly amazing that we can finally do collaborations with the Donkeys. For us they were like the gods of hardstyle for many years.
You recently started producing some new releases together with our very own Toneshifterz, like Empire of The Sun and Jaydee. How is it working with these guys?
We think the Toneshifterz are very talented producers. They produce like madmen, ha ha, and that’s a good thing. They are very creative. A lot of people here in the Netherlands are eager to see them after the tracks were played.
What are your ambitions for the next 10 years? Is there something in particular you want to achieve?
To keep doing what we love the most – producing music! To be honest, we are living our dream at the moment so if we can continue doing this, we’ll sign up for it. We also have some great things planned in the future. I can’t tell you what exactly, but we will very soon so stay tuned.
What is your message to everyone who reads this interview?
Thanks to all our fans for supporting us (okay, all our non-fans too). Hope to see you at one of our gigs and don’t expect us to be quiet!
Noisecontrollers go back-to-back with Donkey Rollers at Magic City: Unleash The Dragon on Saturday 29 May at Sydney Olympic Sports Centre.
