Hybrid: Ten Crate Classics

As far as debut albums go, they don’t come more auspicious than Hybrid’s Wide Angle. With its symphonic take on breakbeat, the LP established Mike Truman, Chris Healings and then-third-member Lee Mullin as masters in their field. Morning Sci-Fi consolidated their tendency towards the cinematic, which naturally led to a sideline in scoring films (largely ones that star Denzel Washington).

Despite Hybrid’s ever-widening sound, though, they’ve always remained in touch with the dancefloor as DJs. Fans can still tell you all about the duo’s immense session at Canberra’s Lot33 in 2004 or a tingly sunset slot at Parklife the following year. With Truman the dedicated studio bod, Healings now takes the bulk of the DJing duties, and he’s as seduced by the dark and heavy gear as he is by the sweeping atmospherics the duo has made its hallmark.

This weekend, we’re strapping in for another Hybrid DJ experience. To get in the mood, we thought we’d bypass the standard interview and ask Healings to share with us the ten records that never leave the Hybrid crate. So here they are in all their twisted, late-night glory.

Lee Burridge and Steve Porter – Dirty Panty Ho Wrestler

“One of the only tunes I still play regularly after probably eight to ten years as no one else has come close to doing what the tune does, and it does so well. Heads down, twisted, dirty late-night madness.”

Tom Neville – Robot Restroom

“Absolutely outlandish, this is Tom Neville on acid. It’s wrong but right in every way.”

James Harcourt – Unpleasant Surprise [Popof remix]

“A current master-class in how to do funky techno. This man is the uber-producer.”

G.E.R.M – Glitterball [Cagedbaby Remix]

“A classic peak-timer from this year; always works!”

Kaempfer and Dietze – Shear Force

“A big snarling electro techno funk of a tune. Not massive noisy electro, more just fat and heavy. It bounces precisely where it should bounce. Classic!”

The Chain – GEO

“Recent release on the classic label R&S, this is the essence of everything good in electronic dance music.”

Andrewboy – Diana Beach

“Cheeky bootleg of Moby’s classic The Beach track. A surefire winning track for the bigger dancefloors.”

Aphex Twin – Didgeridoo

“The one record that I have run away from after being slightly over-indulgent. I really did run scared from this tune.”

Mos Def & Massive Attack – I Against I

“Massive hip hop of epic proportions, played at every after-party we have ever done.”

Underworld – Dark and Long

“Released in 1994 and I’m still speechless as to how good and wholesome this tune is!”
