Set to join inthemix on the Sounds of Summer tour, Act Yo Age have established themselves as an Australian act whose calibre for creating club tunes is mighty high.
The duo released their EP, Love from Below through Southern Fried Records late last year, unleashing nine tracks of party goodness that has found its way into the playlists of many a DJ. One half of the duo, Adam, catches up with inthemix.
You’re back from spending NYE in Malaysia. That must’ve been a great way to finish off the year.
It was an interesting show. We were in the Genting Highlands which is like a casino in the mountains. It was like something out of an old Bruce Lee movie. It was pretty cool, definitely an interesting way to finish the year.
What was the crowd like over there?
A lot different to what we get over here. We played a show with Judge Jules and played a lot of main-room kind of stuff. The crowd was like being in a casino, it wasn’t really a target audience if you know what I mean. I don’t think they went there specifically to see us but it was still fun and we still had a lot of fun and I hope everyone else did as well.
You released your EP back in September, how was the reaction to that? Are you happy with your progression from some of your earlier noisier releases?
Totally, compared to what we were doing before. When we first started I guess we were just writing party jams and at that time a few years ago that was the big thing. Everyone was into these short bootlegs and was on this rave bender, it was like rave is back! So I guess we kind of embraced a bit of it as well to a certain degree, those kinds of noisier sounds that we didn’t go too far with. Tim and I are both pretty old, we’d been there and done that, our ears were bleeding. We were kind of like if our ears are bleeding in the studio then our ears will bleed in the club.
So we went back to our roots, which was house music and softer, more soulful sounds. We had our rave time when we were both younger. We went to raves and tore each others heads off. I guess it was time to go back to something a bit softer on the ears.
Are you happy now finding that middle ground in terms of your sound?
Yeah we are definitely happy where we are at. I think everyone that is younger is a lot more accepting of newer and fresher stuff when you try something different and deeper whereas quite a while back people weren’t so open minded. I think people are a lot more open minded now because music is a lot more accessible.
Before to hear underground music you had to go to a record store and buy it on 12”. You couldn’t just go online, there wasn’t Beatport and iTunes. To hear that music people had to go out and see an international DJ or go to a specific club. These days that kind of medium is at an arm’s length. Instead of having to go out a few times to get used to it, they can do it at home. They either like it or they don’t.
