Only just 22, Swedish wunderkind Avicii has already enjoyed a career’s worth of highlights. He has worked with David Guetta, Sebastian Ingrosso and Tiësto. His track Seek Bromance went gold here in Australia and rocketed to number 1 in the UK indie charts, while tranced-out Fade Into Darkness has almost one million YouTube hits. This roll-call of successes has coincided with the DJ’s ascension to some of the world’s biggest stages, including star roles at Belgium’s Tomorrowland and Ultra Music Festival in Miami.
With the Northern summer done and dusted and a long haul to Australia looming, Avicii took a few moments from his punishing schedule to speak to inthemix. Listing the Electric Daisy Carnival in Vegas as the highlight of his 2011, the over-achieving Swede preps us for his Stereosonic takeover.
Have you got any expectations coming in for this tour?
When I heard about it I was really excited to get back to Australia. It feels like I’m not there enough. The minute they announced the line-up I’ve been getting so much feedback on Facebook, so I’m super-excited to get back.
Is there anyone in particular you are keen to see on this year’s bill?
I know almost half of the DJs on the line-up. So I’m really looking forward just to having everyone over there you know. There is no one in particular that I’m super excited to see. I’m excited to see everyone together.
So, is it a bit of a brotherhood of DJs out on the world circuit?
Exactly, yeah.
It seems clear you like working with strong vocals. What do you look for in a vocal performance?
I don’t know. We get so many vocals sent to us. My manager gets 100 vocals a week or something and he just sends the best ones through. And the ones that we end up making something with are usually the ones that when you listen to the a cappella, they actually give you the chill. You just know.
Tell us about Sunshine on David Guetta’s Nothing But The Beat. What input did you have and how did you work together with David?
David contacted us probably a couple of months ago. And he told me he had a track in mind that he thought we could finish together, that he started a while back. So he just sent me some parts of it and I really liked the track so I kind of finished the arrangement and everything my end and added some melodies and stuff. So pretty much everything was on the road. He wasn’t home and I wasn’t home.
