With most artists, working on one album is hard work enough. For Ashley Anderson, that’s never been an option. The celebrated beatmaker and driving force behind Invada Records has just released Deep Impressions – his third album as Katalyst – but now it’s straight onto the next thing. With preparations underway for the album tour, inthemix got on the phone to Katalyst to hear how he’s keeping it together.
So how is life going post-album release?
Well, it’s pretty good actually. Just sort of getting ready for a bunch of shows.
Proudly presented by us….
Yeah. Doing all the fun stuff involved with that. Booking flights and rehearsals and all that sort of jazz. And it’s working on a couple of other little things on the side as well.
Do you feel a sense of relief now it’s out there in the universe, or is it just as you said, onto the next project now?
Definitely a little bit of relief. I guess being so involved in the label side of things there’s loads of admin stuff that needs to be done like, yesterday, so it feels like you’re always chasing your tail a bit. But that time’s passed, and I’m kind of feeling much more relaxed that it’s all out there and well-received and all that type of thing. But I do have a couple things that I’m moving straight onto, so never a dull moment.
You’ve said that you knew you had to do a new Katalyst record. Was that for yourself, or from fan demand?
A bit of both, really. I left a really long time between the first two Katalyst records and I found it was kind to pick up the momentum where I left off. It was a lot of energy to get the brand out there and to the top of peoples’ minds again in some sense.
I didn’t want to leave it as long between the last record and this Deep Impressions record. But, having said that, it still almost took about four years between the records. It was still a fair while, and I’m definitely not going to leave it that long between the next Katalyst record and this one.
Oh, yeah? Can you give us a time frame?
I’m planning on going to Berlin for around about six months, or being away at least for about six months next year, so I was thinking I’d like to get it out just before I leave, which will be around May time, I guess.
Wow! So soon, that’s great!
Yeah, we’ll see how it works out. I mean, it may not be the case. I’ve got two other records I’ve been heavily involved with to come out between now and then. They’re both sort of looking more like international releases.
And will this be the Quakers collaboration with Geoff Barrow and the Coin Locker Kid?
Yep, Coin Locker Crew we’ve called ourselves. Yeah, both those records are pretty much done. The Quakers is totally finished and we’ve got a release date set of March for next year with a US label. And then the Coin Locker stuff; I’m in negotiations with a label at the moment to try and secure a release date for that for 2012 as well. And the good thing about those records is they won’t be on Invada so I don’t have to do all that admin label stuff that I was referring to before.
