The Ministry Of Sound Classics party at ivy has become a New Year’s Day staple in Sydney, and the welcome to 2012 features local stars like Bang Gang, Kid Kenobi and Tonite Only bringing their best-loved floor-fillers. To get us all in the mood early, inthemix asked the three names at the top of the bill to share some of the tracks they’ll be airing on the day.
BANG GANG
Justice vs Simian – We are Your Friends
I think it’s quite obvious why this one will be getting played, apart from the obvious…are you following? But seriously, as much as we cringe at the thought of this song, hearing it is altogether a different thing. Those moments come flooding back into your memory and all the bastardised versions that have haunted us since float off into a far away cosmos.
Nicky Van She & Dangerous Dan – Around The World
This was the first ever record that we signed to our record label and as well as being a kick ass party weapon it has a special place as being the first piece of wax that I was able to smash over and over in fits of joy. It is also a cover of Daft Punk’s smash (of the same name, of course).
Laurent Garnier – The Man With The Red Face
This may not be recognised at the same level of the other party-starter records (they are probably level 11) I have listed above, but it is oh-so-important…maybe even more so than them. It is my selfish anthem. Everyone knows it – or at least they feel they know it when they hear it.
But it isn’t a record that will get you out of a sticky situation at a happening full of juiced-up party people – it will however transform all the popped-up whacked-out minions into true believers of the techno quest. And transformation is important. How did a classic become a classic? Because it went somewhere else before everyone came over to join them.
KID KENOBI
Groove Armada – Superstylin’
This is just one of those tracks that continues to stand the test of time. It was massive in its original version, got even bigger when Skool Of Thought did a bassline breaks mix of it, and well, it still gets a reaction today.
Green Velvet – La La Land (Kid Kenobi vs Poxy Music remix)
This track was very big back in the heyday of breaks in Australia. I was over the moon with it as it was the first time I’d ever stepped in to the studio to do an ‘official’ remix. Production still sounds first class today. Pocket, you rock it.
Krafty Kuts & A.Skillz – These Are The Breaks
Again another breaks classic, from back in the day when it was normal for DJs to change tempos in a set. I’m glad that’s coming back. That’s why I love Moombahton so much; it’s basically the same tempo as these old hip hoppy breaks tunes. Bringing back some funk and grind!
GT (TONITE ONLY)
Freeform Five – No More Conversations (Mylo remix)
This was such a massively influential record for the whole Tonite Only sound. I can safely say we wouldn’t be who we are if this record didn’t exist.
Gus Gus – David (Tim Deluxe remix)
Is this the definitive big room anthem? Quite possibly. Tim’s totally in the zone on this remix and Sam’s old Underwater lablemates pretty much guarantee we will drop this monster on NYD.
Tiga feat. Jake Shears – You Gonna Want Me
The sound of summer in 2006. This track crossed over and ticked every box in every way possible. Amazing combination of talents on this track makes it an all-time classic.
