It’s been two years since South African rap act Die Antwoord released the video for their track Enter the Ninja; the clip quickly going viral and sparking an international fascination with Ninja, Yo-Landi Vi$$er and less-prolific member DJ Hi-Tek. Since then, the group’s self-described “next level beats”, trademark Zef style and refusal to give a single fuck about what anyone thinks has won them an army of Zeflings worldwide. Because when Ninja proclaims in the group’s first single “This is, like, the coolest song I heard in my whole life”, you can’t help but agree.
Recently, the focus on Die Antwoord has intensified. Interscope’s attempts to make their sound more commercial found the label quickly dumped by the group, who announced the split at the same time as releasing a video provocatively titled Faggot. In the trio’s latest single Fok Julle Naaires, they declared that the next person who asks if they’re real will get punched in the face – if the close up of Ninja’s privates swinging back and forth in the Zef Side video didn’t already tip you off, these guys have balls.
In the lead up to their Australian tour with Future Music Festival, we spoke to Ninja and Yo-Landi for fifteen of the most glorious minutes to ever occur and were reminded of just why Die Antwoord are, in all probability, the coolest group of all time.
Ninja, you’ve said before that you once lived in Alexandra Township. What was that like?
N: I was stoned the whole time so I can’t really remember. I just didn’t want to deal with anything so it was kind of just a nice place to relax and get really fucking stoned all the time with the Rastafarians. Everyone smokes the whole day and we just ate cabbage.
So how has life changed for you since Die Antwoord became famous?
N: My fridge is fucking full. I don’t have to borrow money from anyone to ask to buy food.
Y: I’m getting a pool. It takes very long to build one, they can’t just do it in one day. It takes like four to six weeks. But I’m getting a pool, so that’s pretty fucking exciting.
So what’s the next album going to be like? Is it even more next-level than $O$?
N: It’s finished, it’s called TEN$ION, it’s full of songs we made up by accident. It’s the same as $O$, just better. We just stayed in South Africa for most of this year and just carried on making music like nothing happened. And then we just carried on doing what we were doing before.
Do you know what the next video clip is going to be?
N: It’s coming out like fucking soon! Hopefully next week. Because we’re launching a new site next week. It’s called Fok Julle Naaiers and it means like “fuck all your fucked things”. It’s not really a pop single; it’s like a fuck you single. It’s pretty cool, it’s like my favouritest video I’ve ever seen.
