Thinking you'll draw a blank when you look at the inthemix awards voting form tomorrow? Yep, it happens. Here’s what some of ITM’s regular scribes are voting for, plus a couple of industry figures with an ear to the dancefloor.
JIM POE – INTHEMIX STAFF WRITER
Favourite Australian DJ – Simon Caldwell
Simon Caldwell from the Mad Racket crew shares my philosophy of music so much it sometimes feels like ESP when he's on the decks. Aside from his superb taste in deep house and funky techno, he has that knack for reading a crowd, whether opening a party or rocking the afterhours, that only long experience can teach.
Favourite Australian Major Festival – Future Music Festival
Future Music Festival has earned its reputation as the big daddy. With sick lineups that focus on quality and diversity as much as over-the-top quantity, every fan I know between the ages 20 and 50 becomes truly depressed if they have to miss it; this year's was the best yet with all-time greats New Order and Aphex Twin among the headliners and an entire freaking tent dedicated to the mighty DFA Records (making me just a bit homesick for New York). The sprawling undercard of sideshows that seem to go on for weeks makes it seem even more like a holiday. (New Order, The Rapture and the afterparty featuring DJ sets from James Murphy and Tim Sweeney were all among the year's best gigs.)
Favourite Australian Club Night – Adult Disco
Adult Disco needs to happen more often. It's a hard one to beat, given the consistently good programming taste of the Future Classic guys presented on one of Sydney's best sound systems. They get bonus points for ace design, with bold, minimalistic two-tone flyers and posters that take it back to the old school.
Favourite International Artist – André Lodemann
André Lodemann has unleashed some of the most powerful, complex and beautiful dance tracks of the past few years, distorting the lines between house and experimental electronic music from his home in the techno stronghold of Berlin. (Among the highlights of the year was his devastating remix of Mario & Vidis' Changed on Future Classic.) This year saw the release of his debut artist album Fragments 1, which collects some of his standout singles along with new work. He's a great DJ too; his podcasts are always spellbinding, with unerring track selection and ultra-smooth mixing.
