The OzSessions parties have steadily been growing in Brisbane, exposing new DJ talent with great success. ITM chats with the OzSessions crew about their goals and aspirations.

What were your goals when starting the ozSessions events?

We aim to achieve a regular event that showcases NuSkool talent and up and coming DJs in the scene. We intermix this with experienced DJs to balance it out and provide a supportive atmosphere for the new DJs.

We also wanted to provide a diverse range in the music which will hopefully lead the way to a wider variety of sound within Brisbane.

Can you tell us a bit about your promotion outfit and team, as it consists of a number of quite young people in the scene?

We’re a group of very good friends who decided to try and make a difference in the Brisbane dance scene. We don’t have any illusions of grandeur but we’re willing to take it as far as the patrons will go with us.

There are six of us who devote time and money into making the event what it is. The team members in alphabetical order are:

Brad Revell

Christian Blunden

Cory Prowse

Luke Robins

Matthew Balaam

Nathan Roussos

You seem to have taken a number of young DJ’s under your wing, and been very successful in promoting them and getting them gigs. How have you gone about acheiving this?

We love to give young DJs a few gigs at ozSessions. This way they can develop a small fan base and make a name for themselves within the community. Other promotors have always seemed eager to give our DJs a go once they’ve heard their stuff.

Those who attend an ozSessions are definately not dissapointed with the DJs in our line up either, there is a lot of talent out there that doesn’t see much of the spotlight.

Whilst pushing the young up and coming talent you have also used a number of established DJ’s as well. What was your reasoning behind this and how do select the DJ’s you use?

We need the experienced DJs to play with the up and coming DJs to give personal support to the NuSkoolers. Just about every new DJ that has played at ozSessions has received encouraging comments and pointers from established local DJs and this helps build their confidence.

In selecting experienced DJs, ozSessions looks at different themes in music and then selects suitable locals for the night. We like to vary our selections so no ozSessions night is ever the same.

The ozSessions juggernaut seems to be growing with every party. What are your plans for the future as its popularity increases?

We have a few more parties planned for this year and we are also looking at flying a young up and coming trance DJ for his first interstate gig in December.

A much larger event is planned for the end of the year in partnership with the awesome guys at Tankeo (www.tankeo.net) of whom we are also good friends with.

Overall we try not to plan too far in front, as all our plans are based on the success and feedback that we get from our parties. We always give away cd mixes by an ozSessions DJ at each ozSessions and chase up people’s thoughts on them.

Of course we’d love to take this as far as we can – we just stay realistic about where we are.

Do you have any other plans in the pipeline for promoting the younger DJ’s already on your roster?

A lot of our young DJs are managed by an Agency known as Jencorp. Two of our Trance DJs – Brad Revell and Elemance – who are rising stars in the Brisbane scene have also started to be noticed in the Gold Coast scene. From there we hope to increase their coverage to interstate gigs in the very

near future.

Are you still looking for more up and coming talent to add to your roster? If so what should a budding DJ do to get noticed with you?

The team is always looking for new DJs and encourage them to send in a demo CD for us. Any style is welcome, and as long as the team agree that the demo is passable and has potential, we guarantee that we will give them a set at an ozSessions. Email mykproductions@email.com for further info if you want to get some info on where to send demos to.

The next OzSessions for 2002 will be @ The Shamrock Hotel (basement) on Friday, October 25th with DJs – Brad Revell, Elemance, DJ Cam & Raster plus special guests from USS, Cosmo Cater & Ian Nearhos.
