Most new ITM reporters silenty slide in and make their mark on this site with the strength of their writing…but I couldn’t let new ITM reporter and all round cheeky character Hypnose creep in without making a bit of a fuss.

FULL NAME: Aaron Roach

DJ NAME: hypnose

AGE: 21

CITY: Melbourne

HOW DID YOU BEGIN MAKING MUSIC?
I started producing when I was around 16 with some old DOS tracking
programs. I had bought a magazine with some free music programs on them, and it since I had always wanted to write my own music, I got started straight away. I don’t even think I read the magazine! About a year and a half ago a mate of mine bought some decks, and I was straight around there to pretend I was Sasha, Paul Van Dyk and Oakenfold all in one!

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE NOW?
I solely use a computer to produce my music, with the same old DOS programs! :) (plus the usual standard of Rebirth and various other soft synths) I finally got a pair of decks at home now to tone my skills, and it’s helped heaps!

DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE.
I don’t have a specific style, but I do love my progressive trance as well as my house. I produce trance through and through, with melodic elements and heavy kicks to get you going! When I play a set it will comprise of tech house and trance, depends on what time I’m playing.

WHO HAS HELPED YOU GET STARTED?
A belief in myself that I would go somewhere with something I love doing has helped enormously. So many people have helped me realise my dream along the way. Kandyman, Garth Lategan (Smile Police), Nexus and the Kandy Kollective, Simon Connolly, and more importantly, everyone I have met along the way who I consider to be my best friends even when they’re not around me. You’re all the greatest! :)

YOUR MAJOR INFLUENCES ARE?
Sasha and Max Graham are definitely my major influences. They have created some of the most dynamic sounds you could imagine, and are really nice chaps too! hehe..A lot of the pioneers of the scene have helped me to be where I am now by listening to their sounds and mixes.

YOU WOULD MOST LIKE TO SEE?
Sasha of course, and maybe even meet him! :)

WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE GOOD AND BAD ELEMENTS OF MELBOURNE’S SCENE?
Obviously the good elements are the way we bring our scene together in such a way it’s admired all around the world. We are very lucky to have the things we do. The good thing about the Melbourne scene is that the scene is so diverse everyone’s tastes are catered for. Whether you like techno, trance or NRG (just a couple of genres out of the bazillion), you will be sure to find a place in a club or a party that has everything you desire.

The bad – the most foremost thing I can think of is politics in music. They shouldn’t be there because music was made to be enjoyed and loved. You shouldn’t sledge someone or a club just because they like something different to you. I think another part of the scene that needs a good look at itself is the “You’re a drug user if you go to raves” stereotype. A lot of people assume that you are on something because you go to rave parties, specifically the media. I know a fair few people who don’t partake in the use of illicit substances, and never will.

THAT’S RIGHT, YOU DON’T TAKE DRUGS AND HAVING KNOWN YOU FOR A WHILE NOW I DOUBT YOU EVER WILL. MANY PEOPLE WOULD CRITICIZE YOU AND EVEN SUGGEST THAT YOU HAVE NO PLACE IN THE ‘RAVE’ SCENE, ESPECIALLY AS YOU CREATE THE SOUNDS OF THE RAVE SCENE. WHAT DO YOU SAY TO THAT?
I’d say stop being so superficial and stop living the raver stereotype. There is more to life than taking drugs at a party. Acceptance is supposedly the whole meaning behind raves. It’s something I’ve lived by since day one of my party days. I’m not going to hold it against someone if they take drugs, but at the same time I don’t condone them. People think they can take drugs every week and it won’t affect them. IT DOES! The thing that keeps me going is hearing from some of my closest friends how proud they are of me that I can refuse to take drugs. The only drugs at a party for me is the music and vibe. Isn’t that what it’s all about?

ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO PLAYING HEAVEN IN CANBERRA DECEMBER 2nd? WHAT BIG THINGS DO YOU HAVE IN STORE FOR THEM?
I seriously can’t wait, albeit the silly train and bus I have to take to get there! It’s going to be a great experience to play in front of a different crowd. It should definitely be a great time if I can control my nerves for long enough! I’m most likely going to start with some cruisy house, and bang it out from the middle. This could change on the night though as you’ve got to know how to peak a crowd at the right time. A lot of top notch DJ’s have played at Heaven, so I’ve got to keep it constant!

WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF THE MEMORABLE PARTIES THAT YOU HAVED PLAYED?
Every Picture Tells a Story 20
Redfest (That ol’ olympic games thing!)
Earthcore
the NRG (Next Rave Generation) parties
RDC (all of ‘em!)
A residency at @mosphere
the list goes on! :)

WHERE CAN WE CATCH YOU IN THE FUTURE?
2/12 – Heaven, Canberra
16/12 – Dark Forest, Melbourne
31/12 – Rave Odyssey, Melbourne
Every Friday at @mosphere, Melbourne.

HOW FAR DO YOU WANT TO GO?
As far as the scene wants me to go! I don’t have expectations on where I want to be, but if the chance ever arose to play overseas I would immediately jump on the opportunity as it would definitely be an experience to play to a crowd from a totally different background.

DO YOU EVER STOP SMILING!?
hehehe..Only when I’m sleeping, even then I’ve been known to blurt out words and laugh to myself. Scary huh? :)
