Sneaky Sound System have came along way since their humble beginnings at their weekly Sunday gig “Sneaky Sunday” back in December 2000. Combining of two Dj’s, an MC and a Sax player, there fresh and funky sound have infiltrated Sydney’s club life playing at almost every venue around town including Gas, Globe, Home and The Basement. Not holding up during the New Year Period, ITM’s Milly catches up with one of the Sneaky boys, DJ Mood about their ventures of late.

How and when did Sneaky Sound System come about?

Two years ago Hesse & myself (Black Angus) were starting a new night called SNEAKY Sundays at Joe Diamonds (now Mars Lounge). A week before we opened we met MC Double D at a party and he started rapping over some records I was playing – he was quite amazing. So we asked him to come down and join us, along with a sax player and a couple of dancers. We had about 200 people and they went crazy, so it was onwards and upwards from there.

You have had a busy year this year. Any memorable gigs?

Our JOIN IN parties at the Basement on the first Saturday of every month have definitely been the highlight. Other rippers were Queens Birthday @ Hugo’s Lounge, WOW@ the Kitchen in Melbourne, Berlin on the Gold Coast and our Sundays @ Chicane.

To people who have never seen you before, how would you describe your style of music?

Short answer: very funky
Long answer: Deep, black, jazzy, funky, breaky house music with a splash of old school littered with rhymes and sax lines.

You have already recorded 2 tracks, any plans for more recording?

Absolutely, we’ve actually recorded 8 tracks and are working in the studio right now to get a few more together. Once we’ve got our sound down pat we’ll be looking to release things ASAP – so stay tuned.

Is there a story behind why you wear you signature white visors to gigs?

Well, we’ve always has “pseudo” Sneaky merchandise just for ourselves really, or we give it away. We were playing outdoors before Norman Jay and it seemed like the perfect way to snare a little shameless self promotion. Norman was even wearing one, so mission accomplished!

Who do you aspire to musically?

I don’t think we aspire to anyone really, but we are influenced by everyone (good & bad) and inspired by anyone doing something different. In saying that, it would be nice to be a hybrid of Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Nile Rogers and the Beasties.

What’s planned for 2003 onwards?

Record and release our music, tour the US/UK/Europe/Asia, put on more parties (big and small), stay at home a little more – and that should do it.

You have a couple of gigs on NYD, anything spesh planned?

Well we’re doing our own private NYE party in a Penthouse with Louie Austen from Vienna which will be pretty “spesh”, then bag some sleep and head down to Splash which will be massive, then off to the Icebergs in Bondi for another private party with Louie, and lots of French champagne and very little sleep!

Catch Sneaky Sound System at Splash on New Year’s Day.
