Simon Coffey (aka DJ Nervous), along with a great crew and a bunch of very dedicated trance music fans, put together a little party named Transmission. That little party has now sold out every single time it has ever been staged and the next party looks to be no exception to the rule. ITM’s Candyflip asks Nervous what’s new in Trance-land.
Will you personally be doing anything very different this time out for Transmission?
Well, it’s an Anthem’s event and I’m pulling out all my old stuff. Of course, my favorite DJ’s in the world are playing directly after me. It’s such a priviledge to host a party where your fav trance DJ’s get to be there as well.
OK, so what’s new in your record box these days?
Right now I’m enjoying massive doses of Trance which has been well received by the Sydney dance crowd. My current fav trax are: “Proceed” by Kid Vicious on Ferry Corsten’s Tsunami label (wicked trance) and one called “Mooga” by Digital Blonde (England). That last one is one of the most popular trax on trance dancefloors – I definitely want to play that one at Transmission!
How did you feel the Hexa-Dex technology went at the last Transmission? Was it enjoyable to play with and would it be something you’d want to use on a regular basis? Will we see it at this Transmission perhaps?
All the DJ’s who played on the Hexa-Deck Technology loved playing. They had a ball and I loved it too. It was wonderful to have the flexability to have various DJ styles and inputs to one set. It was also something that Sydney has never seen before. This is what Transmission is about – creating new boundaries. But at this Transmission, the return of the Quadro-Deck Technology is essential for the Anthem’s event of the year. We might use Hexa-Deck again though so stay tuned.
There was some criticism of the sound the last time out. Did you guys notice it straight away?
Yeah, of course we noticed it. We ran to the sound desk immediately. We used Pioneer mixers that night and once it went over 120db, it started to distort. If you were up the front, it hurt, if you were half way back you wouldn’t have noticed. The same thing occurred at a few other high profile events that occurred after ours and since then, most promoters with big events have swapped over to Vestax due to our experience. We’ve since arranged to get the best mixers that this world has to offer, which is Vestax. It’s really exciting because they are a DJ’s dream to work with and we’re sure the sound will be absolutely superb this time out.
Transmission is perhaps the biggest, home-grown, ‘little-Trance-party-that-could’ event in the whole country. How proud are you to be a part of (own) it?
It’s taken a lot of work to get Transmission to where it is today. Lisa, Troy, the Transmission crew and I work really hard toward this commitment that we all have, which is to make Transmission the best dance party in the world. Basically, I’m very proud of Transmission and can’t wait for this one to go off because we believe that we have the perfect venue, perfect production and a perfect line-up.
Tell us something about the upcoming National Tour and the new CD?
The National tour will feature DuMonde, aka DeLeon and JamX, as well as myself. It’s going to Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Sydney. It’s to coincide with the Transmission CD which is out now as well – featuring DuMonde on one side and me on the other. It’s very trance-y, people will love it! DuMonde have turned it on big time with some great german trance. I’m really happy to be able to mix a CD with two DJ’s who I admire greatly. To give you a feel for the 74 minutes, some of the trax are: Dumb people, The Angle of Death, Café Del Mar, and just heaps of trance classics remixed, including Moby’s “go” and then there’s the big trax at the moment, like Revolution by BK and Silence by Taiko.
Getting off Transmission for a moment, how are your other regular gigs going? What’s coming up that’s of interest?
Well, Plastic is going fantastically well since the move to Tantra. It’s packed each week and the crowd has shifted as well. It’s more of a (I hate to say it) “good looking” crowd. The rave element is still there and so are the friendly faces. It’s awesome to be around because Plastic has shifted to a new level. Come down and see!...
