DJ Flipside is definitely a rising name in Sydney’s hard house and trance scene. With his name appearing on many national parties, holding residencies at the Icebox on both Wednesday night for Stun and Saturday night for Rocket (which he also runs), he definitely is one that is passionate for the scene.

With his cutting edge sound and razor sharp skills he has a strong and distinctive sound with a unique blend of hard trance, hard house and uplifting trance. He has created a loyal and strong following, which keep coming back for more, simply because he always keeps them on there feet! ITM’s scattedcookie spoke with him about what he’s been up to of late.

What sound are you pushing at the moment?

At the moment I along with the altitude crew are trying to push hard the uplifting trance sound. I fell in love with it when Nervous used to play it. I play it from the deeper side to the more uplifting banging sound from Nukleuz Green. The gigs I have just done with Armin van Buuren at Two Tribes and then the club gig at Gas were just amazing. Also I play harder banging trance at the box and regional gigs also tend to like it tough.

You have just recently returned from a tour of Melbourne, where you played at the legendary super club Bubble. How does the Melbourne scene differ to the Sydney scene?

They like their hard trance and really banging stuff with a funkier tip. They just groove right along as if they are dancing to funky house or something. Really cool up for it crowd we had a ball down there. I have been down there once before to play Sundaze for Jason Midro and the crowd are very similar.

You also run a successful trance night on Saturdays @ The Icebox. Any special events we should keep our eyes open for?

We have a full trance night coming up with Diggs and Morro and the Liquid M boys also we will be giving away copies of the Cream Trance Anthems CD. On the 19th April we have Richie Braic from the legendary Bubble and Hard Kandy nights in Melbourne, I saw Richie when I was playing down there and was blown away, the boy is a freak. Also from Bubble on June the 7th we have Johnny L.

You’ve played at some of the biggest events in Sydney, including Transmission, Utopia, Sublime, Gatecrasher and the recent Two Tribes. What has been you’re favorite DJing experience to date and why?

At the moment Two Tribes just for the sheer size of it and the caliber of the internationals that played. Am really looking forward to the next Transmission on the 24th May as this will be my first main stage Transmission. It is also a full on trance event so we can crank out some really nice uplifting stuff to 5000 people.

You’re playing alongside trance legend Paul Van Dyk at his Sydney gig at gas, what can we expect to hear from your set?

I’m doing the second room this time next to some other great new caliber DJs like Archie, Amber and Aladdin. I’m not sure what time I’ve got but if I’m doing the same time as PvD I guess I will have to play a bit harder. I will just take a massive bag and see how it goes?!

What 5 tracks are you hammering at the moment?

Osiris – Oneness With Universe, DJ Dean – Check Your Ears Remixes, Nick Rowland and Dave Wright – Silverspeed, Gods Child (Phatt Bloke And Slim Remix), and on the uplifting stuff Armin vs Tiesto – Major League and Moogwai – Viola(Armin van Buuren Mix).

What Local DJs to you give credit to and why?

Yoshi for always getting them up, Andrew James cause the guy can mix anything, Nervous cause he’s the man and John Ferris cause he’s such a funny person. Liquid M on the live front are amazing.

If given the chance, where would you most like to play?

I could do the old cliché and say England but I have been doing shows in Melbourne and I have Brisbane and Tasmania coming up so I really like playing here. I liked New Zealand when I played there so next somewhere like Thailand would be pretty cool.

Where do you see yourself headed in the next 2 years?

Trying hard to get into a studio with some one really good is a major goal. Keep rising up the DJ ladder and have as much fun traveling and playing to Sydney.

Flipside plays Stun and Rocket at Icebox weekly. He will also be playing at Gas on Sunday 30 March with Paul van Dyk, to purchase tickets click here.
