Sydney’s BeXta is coming back to Melbourne on the Easter Weekend to bang it out at Launch- taking place at QBH on Sunday 20th of April…MzRizk decided to get “strange” with BeXta before her arrival…

You have been producing and DJ’ing for nearly ten years, have you ever thought about a change in career?
That has to be the strangest first interview question I have ever had! I want to write film music, but not yet, other than that – no. Or are you making a subtle suggestion? ;D

There are so many genres of electronic music, what were you listening to when you fell in love with the electronic scene?
The first dance I loved was Moby, (next is the E genre), Prodigy, Digital Boy, Transformer 2, Future sound of London, Jam and Spoon, there’s so much of it- I love.

Where are you most happy and why? The studio, DJ’ing at an event or playing live at an event?
Playing live and in the studio. Writing and playing your own music is such a release, and an expression.

You have travelled and played across Australia for a long time now, where do you like performing the most?
The hometown is great, but I love Perth and Canberra – they are the most up for it, unpretentious crowds. There’s always a mutual respect thing going on while I’m playing. Everywhere is different- I love and respect that.

Has your style of music changed over the years?
I’ve always been into beautiful dance music. Sure, it might be bangin’, but there’s always an element of beauty in the musicality or the production. I’ve probably slowed down in my old age (!!).

How do you feel being a role model for younger female DJs around Australia?
I’m not sure, I don’t like to think about it too much, there’s too much pressure.

Who are your greatest influences and why?
I get my influences from everywhere. Musically, probably Underworld, Jam and Spoon, lots of alternative rock, Grinspoon that sort of thing I love, even Kitaro and Peter Gabriel play a role in my influences. My other influences come from life, the bottle shop, where ever…

Launch is coming up in Melbourne soon- do you enjoy these events and why?
I wouldn’t do them if I didn’t enjoy them. Why, because it’s what I do, I love it, and that comes across I hope.

What is your greatest achievement in the electronic music industry?
Blowing up 2 PA’s at the Big Day Out.

When is the next Mixology coming out and have you thought about doing a VS CD with another DJ?
Mixology 5 is coming out mid-year. No I haven’t thought about a VS thing for a CD. I’m very happy with where the Mixology series is, and so I’ll keep doing that for a while.

I was looking at your studio and I was amazed- are you always updating equipment and what’s your favourite piece of equipment?
At the moment, it’s the Access Virus KC. So many sounds, not enough time. I also love the Sherman filter bank. It’s rare, got some beautiful filters and it doubles up as a baseball bat.

Any tips you can give to upcoming DJs and producers?
You have to be ugly to be a DJ, so if your good looking, forget about it!

What is your favourite alcoholic beverage?
What are you talking about? I don’t drink!

What do you like to eat after a gig?
That’d have to be the strangest last interview question I have ever had! I can’t tell you. It’s too naughty.
