Recently recorded at Rubicon in Sydney, listen in as the Stick Figures do their thing live.
Comprised of an engineer ( Mike Ross ), DJ ( Dave Slade ) and sampling guru ( Adam Maggs), the three members of Stick Figures each bring a unique flavour to the table in order to create their monster sounding hybrid of electro and tech house. With each of the Sticks having spent numerous years toiling in their chosen fields, the forming of Stick Figures midway through 2003 provided the catalyst needed for all three to really bust out their original produce.
With underground club hits in their cheeky debut single No Hands No Teeth and follow ups I Know What It’s Like (To Be A Dog) and Useless , the Sticks were responsible for some of the most slamming and debauched club tracks of 2005/6. Quickly making a name for themselves on both the local and international scene by the end of 2006 they’d been nominated for the Australian Dance Music Awards Remix of the Year , drawn attention from top jocks such as Damian Lazarus , John Tejada , Switch and Funk D’Void and had tracks licensed to compilations including Bang Gang’s ‘Mashed 2’ for Ministry Of Sound, We Love…Sydney and Future Classic Attractions.
Having assaulted your senses with their vinyl releases, the Stick’s unleashed their debut album in late 2006. Low Self Esteem is a mixed long player featuring the best (and worst) of their past, together with several brand new cuts. A live mix of their own productions, the album journeys through the dark and twisted regions of underground techno, electro and house. From the loose attitude of Number One featuring French no wave heroine Lizzy Mercier Descloux to the minimal cool of Firenze, or the tearing lead lines and chunky drum programming of Useless this is a solid club mix showing that this Sydney three piece are on par with the best in the world. . . all the while refusing to take themselves too seriously.
Stick Figures completed their first national tour after releasing the album near the end of 2006 having played to packed dance-floors around the country and at Earthdance Festival, Kiss My Grass in Melbourne and with performances coming up at the Playground Weekender and The Great Escape the Sticks have been busy capturing the hearts and feet of dance-floor junkies all over Australia. With new tracks in the pipe and a couple of high profile remixes around the corner too, 2007 will see the trio take their 3 way dynamics on a stroll around Europe for a bunch of live shows as well as their punchy new “DJ” set up utilising decks effects, laptops and more.
