“DJ Kentaro may be a turntablist – a world-beating turntablist, in fact, having taken the DMC World Championship title in 2002 – but that doesn’t mean that only spotty geezers in puffas and baseball caps need to look out for him. Because hip hop and scratching represent merely one side of Kentaro’s multi-faceted musical persona.” – IDJ Magazine
The world first heard Kentaro’s name at the 2002 DMC/Technics World DJ Championship Final when he claimed the much coveted champion belt with the motto “No walls between the music” and the “first perfect score ever in the competition.” As World DMC champ he was now alongside turntable giants such as Cutmaster Swift , Roc Raida, Q-Bert, A-Trak and Craze.
DJ Kentaro continued to expand his methods of expression with ‘My Favorite Songs’ – Kentaro’s first ever mix CD – it melded the mentality of a battler with the street smarts and savvy of the hip-hop elite. His ‘On The Wheels of Solid Steel’ mix cd for the seminal Ninja Tune followed this in 2005. Then earlier this year saw the advent of DJ Kentaro, the recording artist, with the release of ‘Enter’ his first studio album that included collaborations with Spank Rock and Pharcyde.
More brazen than fellow countryman DJ Krush, Kentaro’s track selection and tricks behind the decks, melding hip hop, breaks, drum ‘n’ bass and everything in between is untouchable taking music into a realm that nobody has yet explored. Kentaro is moving at the speed of vox. Sleep on his skills and he’s gonna leave you in the dust.
