Music has always held a position at the forefront of what was important to Wax Motif. Growing up in the 90s meant he had a healthy appreciation of the styles of music that were shaping that decade – from the weighty and ever-evolving sounds of trance to the ‘up yours’ attitude, and heavily rooted artists that bore the tag of gangsta rap. However, simply listening to music during his spare time, or occasionally dancing to the top 40-styles that were so prevalent at any house party during the time, didn’t satisfy the musical beast that was rapidly growing inside of him… and so, at the age of 19, Wax Motif purchased his first set of turntables, and to put it colloquially, ‘got crackin’.
Wax Motif immediately began collecting copious amounts of music, across various genres, careful never to skew his commitment to one particular style. Through both vinyl, and digital spanning, Wax Motif built up a repertoire of different styles and/or movements in modern music; Baltimore club, baile funk, breakbeat, hip hop (both old and new skool), drum n bass, electro, and fidget house were the main contributors to his dynamic collection. And it was this choice, the one that ensured he would not be pigeon-holed like so many other DJs, that became the catalyst and defining inspiration for the DJ we see in him today.
After countless hours experimenting with both turntable techniques and genres, playing at friend’s parties, or even just playing to visiting friends and accepting constructive criticism, Wax Motif decided it was time to make his mark. March 2007 saw Wax Motif’s introduction into the Sydney club scene, and from the get-go, he made a point of pumping out clubber-loving sets, all the while succeeding in making each one as unique as possible. Inspired by the likes of DJ Z-Trip, 2ManyDJs, DJ Craze, the Scratch Perverts, and Funktrust, Wax Motif sought to transcend the boundaries of style and genre, as have the above mentioned artists, and cross genres with the ease of breathing, and the meticulous eye-to-detail of a master watchmaker.
