DJ Flagrant is a name that has been synonymous with Melbourne’s hip hop scene for the better part of a decade. Having been drawn to the decks after seeing DMC competitor Alejan rip it up while he was living in the USA, it didn’t take long for Flagrant to realise hip hop was what he wanted to live and pursue for the rest of his days. Starting out on one Sony turntable, he would practice scratching for hours on end, trying to replicate the DMC flavour that had caught his eye. After saving for over a year and a half, pro turntables were bought and the rest, as they say, is history.
Since moving back to his hometown of Melbourne, Flagrant has established himself as one of the most respected DJs in his field, both as a turntablist and as a club DJ. Having held down residencies all over the city and played guest spots at almost every hip hop venue in town, the past few years has seen Flagrant rise to the next level, through his DMC results with the Untouchables Crew (3rd in 2002 and 2nd in 2002 at the Australian finals) as well as his multitude of other work on radio (Hittin Switches, Saturday nights on 106.7 PBS FM, regular guest on Beats and Pieces on Kiss FM), hip hop journalism (Beat Magazine & freelance writing for Fashion Journal, Urban Hitz etc), and production (Bliss N Eso, Brethren, Playdough, Phrase and more).
He also teaches the revered scratching course at DMC records, is a judge at both the Victorian and Australian DMC finals every year, manages M-Phazes (world renowned producer) and Phrase (the first Australian street rapper to be signed to a major label), and has toured the USA three times, playing New York, Philadelphia at ?uestlove (from The Roots) night, Albany, and numerous other dates. In recent times Flagrant has been approached from every angle, moving into management for the aforementioned Phrase, as well as being asked to head up promotions and marketing for an established Melbourne hip hop night.
While the list of achievements and scope of work is impressive, its still behind the decks where Flagrant holds court. He has been the official tour DJ for a number of acts, including soul sensation and ARIA award winner Daniel Merriweather, Universal Records first underground hip hop signing Phrase, Brethren, MC Reason, Infallible, and Cerebral Atrophy. He has also played support for countless international touring artists, from Busta Rhymes and Digital Underground through to Jurassic 5, Lyrics Born and DJ Premier.
As a DJ, Flagrant is a true master of crowd rocking, but it’s the culmination of all his talents that make him truly untouchable.
