Mike Callander’s experience as a DJ is as diverse as one of his sets. With a unique and edgy sound that defies typical definition, and an approach to mixing and programming that is adaptable to any environment – except weddings and 18th birthday parties – he is one of Melbourne’s only DJs who might play to a house, techno or progressive dancefloor on any given night. Mike has held long-standing residencies at some of Melbourne’s most important clubbing institutions such as Sunny, Fokus, Nano, and most importantly Honkytonks, for which he also recorded a mix CD that made its way into record stores across Australia and as far away as Japan.
Mike has toured all across Australia and New Zealand, and as far afield as Berlin, Madrid and Malaysia, playing alongside artists as diverse as Mathew Jonson, Michael Mayer, Radioslave, Agoria (at Berlin’s Watergate), M.A.N.D.Y (both in Melbourne and Berlin), and Mr C (in Melbourne and Berlin). Of course it’s impossible to capture on paper the diversity and feel of Mike’s sets, but perhaps the best indication is a snapshot of some artists alongside whom Mike has played in the last 12 months (2007-08) – including Sven Vaeth, Optimo, Monolake, Tiefschwarz, Alex Smoke, Petter, Phil Kieran, John Aquaviva, Ben Watt, James Zabiela, Joris Voorn, SuperMayer, plus bands such as Booka Shade, Trentemoller and Fujiya & Miyagi (in Madrid).
Mike DJing has also earned accolades from countless touring international artists, with many labelling him one of Australia’s finest – most notably Get Physical’s DJ T., who invited Mike to play in Berlin at his anniversary event to celebrate 20 years of DJing. Outside the clubs, Mike has made numerous appearances on radio such as Triple J’s Mix Up (both as a guest and presenter), and currently hosts a show on Melbourne’s Kiss Fm alongside Gavin Keitel. And yet he feels this is all just the beginning, with his first productions scheduled for release in 2008, and his first remix projects already underway.
