Mark Nicholls is Canberra’s new kid on the block from North West UK. He first started spinning ‘the wheels of steel’ in 1999 in Liverpool and Manchester including Zanzibar, Camel Club, Revolution, Modo, Lemon Lounge and M19. Nicholls hit Aussie shores in 2007, coming directly to the capital to work in commercial real estate, but didn’t waste any time in shipping his mixer and his record collection over, whilst purchasing a pair of Technics 1200s. It wasn’t long until he became good friends with the junglists in the area, i.e. The True Jungle Souljahs and Royal Rollers, and began playing drum n bass at their events. It was at this point he decided to christen himself with a DJ name and whilst sitting at home watching The Mighty Boosh, he subsequently decided on ‘The Crunch’ (if you’re a fan of The Boosh you’ll know what episode he was watching at the time).

The Crunch has never stuck to a single genre. His sets are like a box of chocolates… the style of music he plays will all depend on his mood at the time. When given half the chance he will more than likely bust out liquid funk or jump up drum n bass, but he’s always had a soft spot for techno, after all techno is the genre of electronic music which inspired him to take up DJing back in the Voodoo @ Liverpool days when the likes of Dave Clarke and Richie Hawtin were his idols. The Crunch also spins a mash up of funky breaks, downtempo, dub reggae, hip hop and intelligent DnB when setting the scene in the local cocktail bars. He has also produced several tracks and bootlegs which he occasionally drops into his own sets.
