inthemix is continuing its run of exclusive mixes with another international heavy hitter stepping up the mixing plate. This time it’s none other than Dutch trance star Sied van Riel preparing an exclusive mix you won’t hear anywhere else!
Having impressed many fans on his summer visit to Australia with the Stereosonic festival in 2010, van Riel has been quickly re-booked for another local tour this time coming at us in our clubs for a handful of dates.
The tour also coincides with the release of his new catered compilation package Rielism. To discuss the tour, Rielism and his thoughts on the EDM scene at large in 2011 ITM met up with SVR to have a rap session. Check it out below.
Sied van Riel 2011 Australian tour dates:
Friday 10 June @ Platinum Nightclub, Gold Coast
Saturday 11 June @ The Gaelic Club, Sydney
Sunday 12 June @ Chasers Nightclub, Melbourne
You were last out here for the Stereosonic festival in 2010, how did you enjoy that visit? Any particular highlights?
“That tour was one big highlight for me. Events where massive and we had a lot of fun both on and off stage. A tour like that is awesome as you get to enjoy multiple music styles and you see artists that you haven’t seen live yet or ones that you saw like a year ago somewhere.”
This time you’re coming back for some club shows, how differently do you think about your set when you’re preparing for a club show over a festival set?
“Well on a festival line up you get an hour to do your thing…like I had in Melbourne for instance. I was on quite early in the day because I had to fly to Adelaide for the event there. So you come in, do a quick one hour set and you leave straight away. This time I get to play longer and I can really go all out by doing a proper set and make sure everybody loses calories.”
This tour will coincide with the release of Rielism, your new album. Can you tell us what the mission statement behind preparing that release was like? Were there new ideas that you wanted to try?
“Yeah, for sure. I really wanted to show people that it’s not just trance that I play or like. I like all sorts of electronic dance music and I also play this when I play out live. I’ve always used the entire spectrum of electronic music, but it’s not always possible to play at a slower pace when you do a live set. With Rielism I could show people that there’s a different side to me as well. It features progressive house, trouce, trance, vocals etc. Everything I like. The two discs build up different and have a different vibe as well and that was my aim. It’s not a club CD per se…I wanted this CD to be enjoyed by people at any given time of the day. Pre-partying, driving to work, at work, coming home, even after partying. The reactions and critics have been unbelievably good so far.”
How important is it to create a mood or theme with a mix these days? Is producing something special and unique with your mix compilation what sets it apart from the many others on the market?
“I’m the type of guy that when I do a mix compilation I want to build up, set the mood…take people on a ride and offer something that in my opinion is unique coming from my side. Sure I could have gathered 15 club anthems per CD and mixed them together, but I’ve tried to use different styles, various tempos and not your average tracks or artists to create it.”
Going on from Rielism, Riel Time etc, are there any riffs on your ‘Riel’ name that you haven’t used yet? Riel Estate?
“I know what you’re saying..rielly !! But we’ve only used those two so far…I’m not a big fan of using that “Riel” element at all to be honest, but somehow the rest of the team is. My artist album however will not have a name where the Riel element is used in. I promise. Rielly!”
What’s in store for you for the rest of 2011?
“Finishing the album has my priority. I’ve cancelled a few tracks because I wasn’t happy with them. So I’m back in the studio now in between gigs sweating my royal ass off to get it done. I’m home for four days the next month so yeah…no idea how I’ll manage but I’ll get the job done for sure. Most of the time I get stuff done way more easy when I’m under pressure anyways. And if I don’t make the deadline…it’s no big deal…then we all shall wait longer!”
