With the She Can DJ final looming, we’re turning our attention to a finalist with a fleet of fans around these parts, Claire Morgan. Moving from her original home of Brisbane to Sydney to Melbourne and back to Sydney again, Claire is a hugely passionate DJ with a deep knowledge of house and techno. With a burgeoning production career also on her CV, 2011 has been a standout year.

Claire is also one of the most eloquent DJs out there, and last year she enthused to inthemix about her love of playing on vinyl. “Everything about vinyl is exciting (aside from the outrageous expense, constant disco back, and more-often-than-not broken turntables in clubs which cause you to mix like a muppet and frown/sweat excessively),” she said. “I have downloaded wavs from Beatport and the end result of a burnt CD with my handwriting on it is pretty soulless. CDJs have no looseness at all, mixes don’t drift, needles don’t skip, the challenge and therefore the excitement is lacking – for me, anyway.

“Visible fingerprints, scratches and dings on my records are all attached to precious memories and experiences. I can’t remember half of the track names but I can describe the cover art and the pattern of the grooves, and point to all the bass drops. It’s a visual, tactile, personal medium and, yes, it does sound better.”

The mix Claire passed on for She Can DJ was put together in July, and keen followers would have found it on her Soundcloud a while back. “Bit of a mixed bag, this one,” she explains. “Featured is an all-star line-up of some of the hottest music-makers around the globe, who are all pushing disco, house, techno and dubstep to new heights.”
