This weekend sees acid house authority Neville Watson touch down in Sydney for his only Australian show. He’s picked a good party, too: the Picnic throwdown at Sydney Festival featuring the mercurial DJing prowess of one Andrew Weatherall. With Watson set to step up after his compadre has done his thing, this mix should give you an idea of what to expect. You can also download this mix over at the Picnic Soundcloud. We chatted to the man as he readies his record bag.

Given we’re at the start of a New Year, we have to ask what’s on your must-do list for 2012?
A solo album from myself and also another from myself and KiNK. More 12s and plenty more DJing and live gigs.

Can you tell us a bit about the Checkpoint Charlie parties in Reading, and what made that night special?
Checkpoint was hands down the most consistently insane clubs I have ever been to or DJed at. Thursday night in a Caribbean social club. Proper sound system, underground music and a rabid crowd trying their best to pull the cargo net from the ceiling whilst old Jamaican men played dominos in the bar amidst a bunch of gurning ravers.

Is being a resident something that gives you invaluable experience as a DJ?
Definitely. You learn the art of the warm up and also it’s really enjoyable as you know your crowd and what they’ll respond to. It’s great trying out all those weird tracks you might not be able to play elsewhere.

So how have the live shows with KiNK been going? Are you always adding new toys to the onstage arsenal?
The live shows have been going really well, we did some really fantastic gigs last year. We’re always adding and taking out stuff from the shows, it’s an ongoing process.

Do you still enjoy the process of remixing, or is it more of a stop-gap between your own productions?
Of course! It’s great getting to put your own spin on someone else’s music. Although I sometimes wonder what some people are thinking when they send you just a DJ tool to remix. Ideally it’s better if it’s not a house or techno tune.

So we’ll be seeing you very soon alongside Andrew Weatherall in Sydney – anything in particular you’re looking forward to trying out on us?
It’s my first time in Australia and I’m just really looking forward to turning up with a bunch of wax and enjoying the infamous Australian hospitality. Plus it’s always a pleasure to play alongside Mr. Weatherall.
